Default Average Pay ~ Medical Billing & Coding

Good morning, I am a 40 something female that is on her way back to school. I have decided to take classes for Medical Billing & Coding. I have heard some ups & downs of the career. My past experience is over 23+ years as a Administrative Assist & Accounts Payable Clerk. I love to work with the computer and just key/input. I am wondering if anyone who actually works in this field in Fort Myers, FL, can actually tell me the realistic pay. I have talked to quite a few people and the pays are not even close. I was told if you go to school and get the diploma (which is what I will get) you will earn more than someone who is learning by OJT (On the job training). I am doing the classes totally on-line, I can go at my pace. I don't need the associates degree because I figure I can take more classes later. Please respond with honest answers . Thanks for your help.
