What kind of price range are you looking in and when are you looking to go? That will make a big difference.

....and how many nights do you want? the inns rent nightly, but the vacation rental condos usually have a 7 night minimum. the inns give you good value if you only want a night or two, but the condos will give you more space and better pricing for a 7 night stay.

My husband and I just rented a condo in March 09 at Sundial Resort. We rented directly thru the owners. It was a One bedroom with a sofa sleeper. 25 feet to the beach, perfect for a baby even. During nap time you can still enjoy the beach just sitting on the lanai. Also they have beach chairs and umbrella. Most of all go because of the view!!!! The patio furniture is so comfortable table & 4 chairs plus a chaise lounge and another chair and ottoman. In the living room a leather recliner (can't remember if it rocks) plus a leather sofa. The King size bed is heaven very comfortable. It's very clean and great location on the Island. Please check out the web site WWW.Sanibelbeachparadise.com or E-mail the owner glennp2@comcast.net

I just think this location would be so perfect for the three of you. Plus I promise you'll love being so close to the water. I can't wait to go back again. We've stayed on Fort Myers Beach also but having the beach so close to your unit it's fantastic. Also the pool is steps away from your building. So the beach & pool are close by which is great when you've got a little one.
Have fun.

Check out the chamber of commerce site,or get the number from the site and call, they have always been very helpful for us and we have stayed on Sanibel several times.

I lived on Sanibel Island for a couple of years and I can guarantee that anywhere you stay will be close to the beach! After all, it's an island!
Seriously, the suggestion to contact the Chamber of Commerce is the best idea. You often can't rent a private home for the weekend.
Captiva is also very beautiful. Both have great sunsets.
Edit: I had to search to see if the Realtor who rented me the home in which I stayed is still on Sanibel. (It's been a very long time.) I'm not sure she handles weekend rentals, but she specializes in vacation condos and cottages. I'll send you a DM and you can decide if you want to call her.
TerriC's referral also sounds nice. Sundial is a great place to stay for a few nights.

The economy is bad and it's the summer, so there are a lot of specials right now. As other have suggested, if you go to the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber site Sanibel Accommodations - Captiva Accommodations and click on the links, you can check out the rates. The lowest rate is around $100 a night plus tax (Kona Kai & The Parrot Nest have rooms for $99) but I didn't look at all of them.
Have fun!
