I would move to St Petersburg/Tampa instead if you are from a bigger city or use to urban area.
You get best of both world in St Petersburg/Tampa imo.

Yeah. Anything is going to be better. Four years ago, our daughter attended the first five weeks of Kindergarten. We pulled her out and moved out of state. And the thing is, now it is worse. There is a severe budget crunch, due to the tanking economy. Lee County is one of the worst places for foreclosures and it has all the problems that come with it. It wasn't a nice place four years ago. It is much worse now. Best of luck. Florida is a big state. Lots of other places.

IMHO no. If I were you, I'd look elsewhere.

Both of you have good jobs and there are always positions for people in the medical field. I agree that there are bad areas in Florida, just like any other state. However, South Fort Myers has a lot of lovely neighborhoods. You might also want to look in Naples.
Your post is way too general. First, what is your house budget? Second, would you be sending your child to a public or private school? My friend in Naples sent her 2 daughters to Seacrest and they got an excellent education, but it's expensive. So a lot depends on your personal lifestyle.

What kind of practice is your wife intending to run? Have you visited FMY yet?
There are pockets of FMY that are very nice, and some decent schools, but it's tricky.

Be careful. TedTAce has been to Fort Myers for two days, maybe. He's buying in Lehigh Acres which is a VERY bad place to live.
To answer your question, Fort Myers is a very big place.
The places that you would definitely want to stay out of is Dunbar, East Fort Myers, Pine Manor, Lehigh Acres and some of North Fort Myers.
Estero is very nice, by the way.

I don't think the right way to help Fort Myers is to discourage decent people from moving there. It will never improve then.
