Default Can I rent a boat to get to Cabbage Key?

Hello Ladies and Gents,

How hard is it to navagiate the waters to Cabbage Key and Caya Costo Island? I have never driven a boat before but my father has. He does not have a license currently. What do you need to rent a boat in FL?

Questions answered in order.......

Not very

A Pulse, I.D. and $$$

You can rent a boat at Sanibel Marina, and there was an outfit at Tarpon Point marina in Cape Coral as well, not sure if they're still there or not. They generally give you a quick tutorial, provide a chart, and a number to call if you have trouble. It's not like you're going far offshore, so if you can read a map, and use common sense there shouldnt be any problems.

I know there is a ferry from Pineland marina to Useppa Island, and Upper Captiva. There may be one from there to Cabbage Key as well. The ferry might be a better fit, if you have any concerns about renting a boat, and going it on your own.....

The marina at fishermans village in Punta Gorda rents boats, plus they have a large tour boat that will take you down to Cabbage Key for lunch, I think it's about $25.

I think he means the boat instead of taking a cruise or tour.

I know, which is kinda scary - no offense to NCHereweCome. Sure it's fun, but it's also serious business. Thousands of people are seriously injured each year because a newbie thought he'd give it a try without understanding proper boating safety.
