Yep. I'm done, too.
Guy comes on and asks some questions about the area. Just got back from his happy, happy vacation where life was fun all day long and he just wishes he could go back.
When we tell him what he doesn't want to hear he then tells us we don't know what we're talking about?
Okay, folks. Time to move on. Nothing to see here.

Oh, you poor soul...
Call a realtor.
They'll give you the canned responses you are desperately seeking though it appears you even answer your own questions about the area you don't live in...

Stick to Naples, thats where the paying customers will be. How much did they want for the foreclosure on the Gordon River? thats a good location to start from. Most people live north and the traffic sucks during season, you will be in town and will not have to battle the traffic jams to go home. ( I live a few blocks from there and I like it)
Stay away from short sales, the banks will string you along for months, let it go into foreclosure and you'll pay less after.

Hey, thanks BigMunch. A response from someone other than the "Eager to pessimism, misery loves company, non hackers group"! Amazing, an objective response other than "it is impossible! this is a complete hell hole! don't come here! If a lot of people have that attitude and don't leave, it won't get better and I won't want to live there!
It was sounding like if you had a nice home and job in southwest Florida, you would be so miserable that you would want to get drunk, cry on a forum and then shoot yourself in the head! If you come here on vacation, 1/2 million people will be nice while you are here but if you buy a house, the half a million people will stop acting and turn into vampires and suck every drop of blood from your body! OH YOU POOR SOULS! Seems, some people just are not happy no matter what. God forbid a real catastrophy hit us spoiled a## Americans. Then we would find out a job and money are not everything in life.
Welp. There is nothing else to see on this forum other than doom and gloom. So I am done for now. I will check back later when I am there with my own objective opinion. Oh, BigMunch, if you like fishing, I am bringing my boat down. Would love to go fishing with a local who has "can do attitude".

Maybe we could work out a trade if you are interested an a 2004 build 2400sq ft home in a city run by an insane government.

Thanks, but I am not looking for a home in Cape Coral. I have narrowed down to a few small waterfront communities in Alva, Olga or Naples for now. I plan on renting for at least 3 to 12 months first as well.

Thanks for the kind words.
I have lived here/worked here for 13 years and I have never been to Alva or Olga. come on down and look first is my suggestion, you don't want to have to drive 30 minutes to get to the post office or a store. Not saying that those places are that far away, but I get the feeling they are far from most of the main attractions/businesses. Your best boating in the area is in Estero Bay/off of Bonita beach road. That is why North Naples is much more expensive/popular than North Fort Myers or South Naples.

#1) What was your employment in SWFL?
#2) Will you be working in SWFL?
Seeing the other posts you have written, the answer to these questions are no. Yet, you insist on answering them as if you have done both.
Why is that?
The unemployment rate of SOUTHWEST FLORDIA, not FLORIDA. Big difference. The OP isn't asking about living in Melbourne, or Jacksonville or Gainesville, but SWFL...but, you found a stat to fit your agenda, which you have, just like everyone else albeit negative or positive.
Such a sweet nice poster when it comes to talking about vacation and retiring and boating and drinking, yet so nasty when you talk to those who differ from you. Ah, your true colors. Thank you for showing them. Maybe now just go back on the Sarasota forum where your false sincerity is welcomed & all reality is quickly stopped b/c in your bubble, reality isn't necessary as when you move to PC, you will be retired with no need to work or raise a family. As Port Charlotte, ok, I need to take a moment while I laugh hysterically. Then, again, your posts show a great fit to PC.
As for the OP, whatever. It's a poser coming on to stir up trouble & drama.

Olga and Alva are just east of Fort Myers (10-15 minutes from interstate). The area is on the Caloosahatchee river. I also want to fish the Tenthousand Islands area past Marco Island. Gordon river would be a long boat ride but not as bad as Caloosahathee. Don't mind trailering the boat for some serious fishing but figured the river would be nice for family outings and it sounds like the Caloosahatchee has good fishing too. I am thinking about servicing Fort Myers and Naples with an office in the middle of the servicing area. Flex units near interstate west of Lehigh Acres (yes, I will install security if it is as bad as they say) are very affordable. I was also looking at offices in the area east of the airport in Naples. Thanks for the advise. I will get a list of forclosures when I get more serious about buying.
