Residential wise, they need to stop depending on the babyboomers and start focusing on attracting the working people.

When we moved out in October 2005, The News Press did an article on workers moving out of the area and interviewed us. My husband is an auto mechanic. I do tech support. We had jobs but the pay did not support the cost of buying a first-time home or even renting, for that matter.
That's why we moved out.
The reporter told me that the paper was even having a hard time attracting writers to the area, and that schools, fire and police were finding it tough to find workers.

SW FL is an excellent place to START your business. Its finding corporations and things of that nature that is hard. Most wealthy people started their own business from scratch. Ft. Myers is different in that its economy essentially feeds off itself with the exception of tourism related jobs. Most local businesses cater to locals. There are only a few businesses headquartered her that actually have other locations around the country.

one reason of this slugish job market is due to this global economy. The current administration has signed a bill in effect-about 3 years ago- that allows US businesses to offshore jobs and qualify for tax cuts!
Isn't that funny? lay off people in the US, send their work overseas and get tax cuts. example: Halliburton is recolcating its headquaters to Dubai.
When puchasing goods: clothes, electronics,...etc check where are they made. You will make your conclusion.
