I would stay as close as I could to the beach.

Personally, I love Sanibel. Think it depends on your likes and dislikes; ie. quiet time, pricing, children activities.

what do you like to do? explore? shopping? gator wrestling? pool veging?

kids, single, couple, car?

as a general statement, I would stay in southern end of Fort Myers beach with a car, and then do daytrips all the way from Tampa down to Everglades City.

beware of March break though.

Without a doubt lowest rental prices are in Cape Coral. Sanibel and Ft.Myers beach charge for one week what you can rent for for a month in the Cape. Cost of a gorgeous home on the canal with a heated pool runs about $3100 per month and you'll love it. Cape Coral has a pier and small beach (no dogs) but Sanibel is only about a 35 minute drive for shelling and long beaches. In Feb and march the beach road in Ft, Myers is a nightmare so we never go down there then.Go to VRBO.com for your first source.

What month? Definitely stay on Sanibel Island or Fort Myers Beach if you'll be coming in the off-season (after May) What kind of accommodations do you like?

Here is a link. Click on Where to Stay and then look at different options like small inns or motels.

Bonita Springs & Estero are also very convenient to everything. Depends on what you need. If it's for total relaxation, then I'd pick Sanibel or Captiva Islands.

Naples is upscale and the sand is coarse.
