Mom & pop restuarant success rates are close to impossible. One of the hardest business ventures to take on for many reasons.

Sure, places like Carrabas & Outback may be busy, but they are national and worldwide chain restuarants where people go b/c they know what they are getting. Plus, the financial backing of something Carrabas cannot be remotely compared to mom & pop place.

Comparing restaurants that are on the S & P index to a small joint in CC is sorta fruitless.

Some succeed. Most don't. Restaurant & grocery business is some of the toughest.

As long as we all keep supporting WalMart & Outback, we can continue to watch this happen everywhere over time. Spend an extra few bucks & support your local shops & eateries, then they may have a slight chance!!

Still, though some businesses are closing their doors, there are some others choosing to open them. And so far at Around the Clock Fitness, owner Derik Fay says the business has been successful.

"We opened February 2nd of this year and the response to the facility has been outstanding," said Fay.

Fay says the club already has nearly 7,000 members, despite warnings he got about opening along the struggling Pine Island corridor.

"You know everyone says, ‘Cape Coral, stay away!' You know it's a challenge business-wise,'" he said.

Look how that was taken out of context! And she knows people don't read the links. Well, I do.
Love Around the Clock - that is where I go!

If they offered food and service that was on-par or superior to chains, we would. There are MANY local restaurants we frequent over visiting chain restaurants. Some are GREAT (Maria's) and some are just AWFUL (The Moorings). To this day, I am not entirely sure how a place like The Moorings can stay open so many years and a delish place like Giorgio's closes down.

Sad how some people post misleading info on city-Data just to make the area look bad, and some do it all the time I wonder if the OP has read The boy who cried wolf?

Links are there to be read. I like it very much when you take the other side of any issue and discuss it. But please do it in a constructive way.

"The downtown locations of Scorz Sports Bar and Grill, Bikini Joe's, 850 Lafayette, Eddie Fishbowl's, Sushiyaki, June's Hallmark, Pine Island Travel, At&T and Custard's all sit empty for one reason or another, those sites having closed in the last few years."

Cape Coral economy cannot support having so many restaurants and small businesses.

What's the point of this thread? Everywhere restaurant and businesses are closing. Nothing new there. You take snippits of articles that are trying to promote a change in Cape Coral and try to make everyone else feel the "misery" of living in Cape Coral.

The whole American economy was purely over-saturated with banks giving out loans to people who truly couldn't afford the loan. The American economy was too much about trying to keep up with the Jones. We had a correction. It's back to the basics time. People are not eating out as much; people are not traveling as much. Those businesses that cater to those people are having to deal with all this. Businesses will shut down.

Instead of posting negative things, why not get out into your community and make a difference. If you don't like how council is working.. vote them out. Posting half truth synopsis isn't going to change anything.

I would rather have empty buildings than have bars like Eddie Fishbowl's, Scoez and 850 Lafayette gracing our city. Gross.

Buildings are built with borrowed money which will be paid by a shrinking tax base.

Empty buildings need maintenance by the city and also paid by a shrinking taxes.
Empty buildings need protection by the city also paid by shrinking taxes.
Empty buildings damage the value of commercial and/or residential properties.

To spend money on projects which are not generating any revenue is just too costly and hurting providing other crucial services for the city. Including inspection of hospitals.

“The Lee County Health Department uncovered those problems among 56 violations during a recent inspection of Cape Coral Hospital’s cafeteria.
An unsatisfactory grade was slapped on the hospital after that April 23 inspection. The hospital was put on notice to fix the problems by May 19 or face other penalties.”

“Police raided two grow houses in Cape Coral on Friday seizing 97 marijuana plants in the process.
As police were at xxxx address, they got a call from a property management company about a grow house at xxxx.
A company employee was changing the locks and performing a walk-through on the property when they found 60 two-foot tall marijuana plants growing in the garage.“

At the end residents pay a high price for "looking" at empty buildings.
