Prices will only rise as supply gets tighter. It's no coincidence that there is such a sharp gender gap between males and females in his survey. As evidenced here, males tie much of their gender identity up in the size of their toys, which also happen to consume massive amounts of petroleum products.

as always, i agree that alternative sources need to be brought to the fore. But what do you do in the meantime?...oil is still needed. There is plenty of oil out there. The supply gets tighter because "laws" are passed by freaked out people that are worried that going after it will cause the end of the world. That is a larger contributor to the phenomenon of escalating prices due to tighter supply. There is no such thing as coincidence, only cause and effect.....
Therefore it is no coincidence that females have much of their gender identity tied up in over emotional attempts at rationalizing things that fly in the face of reality and common sense.
(Oh, yes I did! )

big oil corrupted the bush administration and invaded the materials management service: Acoustic triggers were not required on american wells because cheney allowed big oil to infect mms, who then deemed them "too costly". "a 2009 investigation of the minerals management service found that agency officials "frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used cocaine and marijuana and had sexual relationships with oil and gas company representatives." three reports by the inspector general describe an open bazaar of payoffs, bribes and kickbacks spiced with scenes of female employees providing sexual favors to industry big wigs who in turn rewarded government workers with illegal contracts. In one incident reported by the inspector general, agency employees got so drunk at a shell sponsored golf event that they could not drive home and had to sleep in hotel rooms paid for by shell."

so what? Sex, drugs, alcohol, and rock and roll have been "corrupting" influences probably since the dawn of time. There is no industry, and likely nobody for that matter that is uncorruptable. Particularly where huge amounts of money are concerned. The only defense is to enhance the mechanical failsafes so future disasters do not occur, or have less impact.

toxic oil is still present in prince william sound. Unc prepared the definitive study on the ecology of the area and "showed that oil has persisted in surprisingly large quantities for years after the exxon valdez spill in subsurface reservoirs under coarse intertidal sediments. This oil was sequestered in conditions where weathering by wave action, light and bacteria was inhibited, and toxicity remained for a decade or more." exposure to this oil, in turn, caused additional animal deaths. Salmon, for example, had increased mortality for four years after the spill because incubating eggs had come into contact with it. Larger marine mammals and ducks, meanwhile, suffered ill effects because their prey was contaminated. The team estimates that shoreline habitats such as mussel beds affected by the spill will take up to 30 years to recover fully."

toxic oil is present everywhere. The vast majority of those places is right where you want it....in the processed foods and medicines you consume daily, in your autos and machinery, in the transformers that bring power into your home so you can post on cd. Oil is responsible for your cushy lifestyle as it exists today. That's a good thing.....right?

the "seepage" rate into the gulf from natural sources is 120,000 barrels a year. The rate of flow from the deepwater horizon leak is 210,000 gallons a day!

Bp's "containment dome" has failed and the first tar balls have washed up on dauphin island alabama and the oil has reached the louisiana marshes. Florida is next.

nobody is denying that this is a horrible disaster. I'm only postulating that the effort should be on cleaning up what has been done, and moving forward with new lessons taken to prevent and minimize future problems. Advocating for a (permanent) shutdown of new drilling and exploration is akin to throwing the baby away with the bathwater

yc.......

Wow, how do I get a job at one of these oil companies?? That sounds like a whole lotta fun Bet the pay is good too!!

Ahh, the old "blame Bush" crowd...Ya gotta love um Don't know if you've noticed but we've had a NEW president for quite a while now... even if any of your allegations are true I see the new guy has done nothing to "change" them!!

This is why we do not want government involved so much in our lives.

BTW, Mrs. T, there's a huge difference between a gallon of oil, and a barrel of oil!

Great post Yachtcare!!!!
Mr. Cool

I hate to say this, but OPEC had a huge motive to blow up a rig to try to reverse the Obama policy change - and it being a British rig added to the poetry

the timing was pretty weird - Brown of course was bonkers to suggest the libs had done it themselves

I also thought the timing of the oil spike heading into the 08 election was pretty suspicious - OPEC and enemies of America were determined to avoid another 4 years of Republican meddling in their affairs

the thing is, what they miscalculated on is that while Republicans talk tough, they pull their punches when it comes to protecting women and children

but hell hath no fury like a liberal scorned - and now they have bulldog Rahm to deal with

It was the dems that dropped the bomb on Japan, twice.

Just curious....a while back I was kidding someone about driving a Prius with an Obama sticker and I got a warning from the moderator that he wouldn't tolerate personal attacks.
A few posts back,Ruby24 called us all idiots and said he was leaving the forum......let's hope he keeps his word.Hey Ruby....don't let the door hit you on the way out.

What about this idea to fix the dome:
Install a pump impeller near the funnel of the dome to keep the sea water moving so it doesn't freeze. I sent it to BP. This is how they keep water from freezing around docks up north in the winter.

The United States imports approximately 57% of its petroleum based products. As these statistics show, we use 23% of the world's petroleum but only produce about 10%. So even if we double our production, we still won't have enough oil. More drilling is not the answer to our problems. The following government link is not anti drilling, but just the opposite IMO. However, anyone who says we depend on the Middle East for oil doesn't realize that we import most of our petroleum products from Canada.

Here are 10 legitimate reasons not to drill offshore and risk destroying our precious ecosystem.

Keep in mind this was written before the BP oil spill. (it's a .pdf file)

I'm aware of the ratio: 1 barrel=42 gallons. I thought you could do the math yourself. My Bad.

I know I've only been posting links, but so much has already been said that it's best for me to just back up my opinions. Yes, we have so much to lose. Reuters certainly isn't an environmental publication and it reported a couple of days ago that

FLORIDA HAS MOST TO LOSE FROM OIL SLICK
Reuters is part of the state controlled media. Their agenda is clear: to take advantage of the current disaster to promote the administration's programs.
