I'm fairly new to the area. I worked in sales most of my life but have a Bachelors Degree in English and would like to begin a career in education. I am having trouble finding hiring listings for local schools. Any links or information that would help would be greatly appreciated.

Things I need to know more about:

1) What certifications I need beyond my degree.
2) Where to apply/find listing of employment opportunities.
3) Any suggestions on good schools or districts to apply in.
4) Anything anyone with teaching experience thinks someone just getting started needs to know.

Thank you for any and all responses.

B

So, you don't have a teaching license but just a BA?

Teaching for the Career Changer or College Graduate of a Non-education Program: Career Changer

Be prepared to fight a fight if you truly want to teach and do not have a teaching license.

I did this back in 97-01 & it took blood, sweat and real tears. Loved the profession & it was worth the work.

You need to start subbing at every level whatever you can get; this is allowed w/ a simple BA & criminal background check. This is the only way to get a feel for the profession and the grade levels that attract you. Subbing would require you to work a part time job at night as you have to be available during the day & subbing does not completely pay the bills nor would you get health insurance

SWFL is not the place to be if you are looking for quality teacher education, though. The IHLs are anything but.

Be aware what you are asking is a HUGE trend & competitive.

Wow. They finally changed it. Now you at least have to your associates degree. Before 8/09, all you needed to sub was a high school diploma. I knew a couple of people that were subs. Previous experience: grocery store cashiers.

And? Some people are born teachers. Odds are those people weren't, but it is possible.

Some of the biggest punks in education are those with the most degrees

I would never ever willingly chose to sub again unless financially it was the only option. It is very, very difficult if you are doing it day after day. But probably a little more pleasant than dealing w/ rude people who never say thank you when you are a cashier. I worked at Starbucks during grad school, waitressed all through college, and worked retail in high school....still to this day cannot express how far a simple : "Hi" and "Thank you" goes (& this pertains to both sides).

OP should also be fluent in Spanish. Seriously.
