Default Fort Wayne Development

Just wanted to show my hometown some love. This project sounds great and with the Harrison Square project, Fort Wayne is finally showing progress. I also thought this thread could be used to list other new projects going on in the Fort Wayne area if anyone knew of any.

This will hopefully get the housing downtown a kick-start and provide SAFE, middle to higher income living for people who would prefer the downtown as opposed to suburban. I am in huge favor of this.

It would be nice if they provided contact information for those interested in inquiring about the condominiums.

Finally talks of a pharmacy downtown. I've been bugging any city official I can talk to about this. It is annoying when you work and live downtown, but have to rush out on your lunch break to pick up a prescription because there are no pharmacies downtown.

I'm actually surprised there isn't a Walgreens or CVS downtown. There are so many people who work downtown. I'm guessing at night, however, sales would be down tremendously.

I really don't think that is true anymore. The Wayne/Berry area has quite a bit of foot traffic throughout the night around Jk O'donnell's, Toscani, Pint N' Slice, and the Dash-In. There is also quite a bit of activity around the library until it closes at 9. You have to take into consideration quite a few people live in the areas that directly surround downtown, and if there was something that provided necessities, such as a grocery or pharmacy, will bring those people downtown at all hours.

Also, downtown has been the place for bike riders and I see families, young adults, and kids utilizing the bike lanes well into the night.

Default This is a good start!

I have always been pretty indifferent towards Ft. Wayne. Hopefully we can see more progress happen so that more people can have a truly positive opinion of the whole city (not just the SW area of the city)!

Now I should add...if this project becomes the type where a certain percentage of residences are required to be available for "low-income" residents, then the project will not be good long-term.

I agree and I really hope that doesn't happen.

Why would you say that? Poor people don't deserve to live downtown? There is already so much class division for a city the size of Fort Wayne, adding fuel to the fire is not a way to help the situation.

Also, I would like to add, I lived in a mixed-income housing unit in Chicago. I think fifteen to twenty percent of the residents had to be below a certain line, heck, I may have fell below that line, anyway, it was often considered one of the most clean, safe units in the city. The worst crime that the area suffered were bikes being stolen from outside the building and every once in awhile a vagrant would get into the dumpsters outside, but that happened everywhere in Chicago. I guess I am trying to say there is no reason to have reservations about having a housing unit be mixed income, it should be examined and looked at openly. The way the economy is going, I think some places are going to have no choice but to make their housing mixed income.

That's not really true. There are plenty of low income housing units that have been built on the "rich" Southwest Side, which btw have brought Homestead's test scores down.
