Broadripple dont forget the Greedy Illinois company Navistar has a lot of divisions.

One division is Monoco coach which happens to be in Northern Indiana.

Memory recalls Monoco actually transferring all jobs out of Oregon and back to Northern Indiana.

Just another example of a company settling in where there is a labor force.
In this example Elkhart CO. being the RV MFG capial it would make sense to house your workers in that portion of the Midwest.

So that was a gain for the northern portion of your home state.
This also came at a time when the RV industry was turned upside down with the recession.

Navistar bought monoco though.
Also Elkhart is my hometown and its the RV capital of the world so you could say it brings some *prestiege* to be located there.

Navistar would be stupid to operate their main RV manufacturing facility out on the West Coast, with 90% of the RV suppliers located right here in Northern Indiana. Very good business move on their part.

Yes BINGO.......

This is a prime example of the dynamics at play when a company decides where to locate operations.

Lets just say the company at play was solely basing the decision on a tax issue or a tax subsidy of somekind.

The benefits of having all your supplies next door would outweight the cost of a tax that is higher.

The same can be said for a labor pool
access to a network of transportation isssues
access to medical facilities
access to colleges and universities or vocational schools

The list is practically never ending.
Not sure of the dynamics in Oregon where Monoco had a facility.
Maybe they have a large number of RVs located in the Mountain West and it saved a bundle on transporting the finished product.

Where the founders of Monaco Coach created the start-up in Oregon. It was through later expansion that they built the manufacturing plant here in Northern Indiana. It is obviously hard to locate a company headquarter's in a place where you have roots to, such as Kay Toolson had with Oregon. However, now that Kay retired and Navistar took over, there are no 'roots' there anymore, so to speak. Strictly business.
