Like domergurl mentioned, there are several plants in and around Columbus.

I guess by the keyword "heavy duty" he might be working at CEP (aka Engine Plant 1 and etc.) on National Rd. or FEP (aka GOB) on Marr Rd.; both of which are in Columbus.

Hey,
Thanks for your replies. As I mentioned I don't know how this website really works but I did get some replies. My son works on big trucks with diesel engines and he likes Cummins. That being said, I read that Columbus is the "headquarters" of Cummins and we were wondering what sort of jobs are actually available in Columbus with the company. I did look on the Cummins website but could not glean much information on this particular subject. Or maybe I don't know how to find the info????
So, the questions are:
What sort of jobs are available that would suit someone with his training?
How to find out if they are hiring?
And if you know anything about the company that is pertinant that would be appreciated too.

mbuszu, you sound like you really know Fort Wayne. Where would you recommend looking for housing for a family with 2 small children (and dog). Money will be really tight for a while. Obviously, a safe neighborhood. Any info would be appreciated.

I have checked out Indianapolis but the crime rate is extremely high and surrounding suburbs I have heard (Carmel, Fishers) can be snobby/conservative. So, not so sure about there????

Fort Wayne and Columbus are both very rural (think farmland inside city limits) and conservative - much more so than Indianapolis or its suburbs.

The crime rate in Indy is relatively high, but it is a major city with its share of big city problems. The downtown area is very clean and safe, as are dozens of other neighborhoods inside city limits. Yes, there are bad parts, but that's the price you pay to live in or around a major city.

Carmel and Fishers can be snobby, sure, but the expensive neighborhoods in Fort Wayne and Columbus will be snobby also. It isn't a regional thing, it's a "we have money and think we're better than others" thing. You'll get that anywhere.

From what you mentioned (Seattle background, like the amenities of a city), you'll be happier in the Indianapolis area than either Fort Wayne or Columbus.

I'd look into the neighborhoods on the southwest side of Fort Wayne, off of Illinois Road just west of Hadley Rd (Such as Shorewood or one of it's connecting neighborhoods), or between Illinois Road, Covington, and Aboite Center... in that vicinity you'll find many 2000+ square foot homes with 4 bedrooms for sale in great well established neighborhoods in the 100-180k price range. These neighborhoods are in the right area in terms of proximity to things to do, proximity to highway 69, closeness to the airport, access to the best schools and all the businesses you could ever want.
