Fort Wayne definitely has potential, but it seems like there have been no solid projects proposed downtown since Harrison Square, which is a disappointment without apartments or retail.
With the exception of 5/3 Field, what shopping do you think you can do in downtown Toledo? Getting a casino is nice for Toledo, but I am pretty sure they are not building it downtown. As it is now, downtown Toledo has a baseball stadium and Tony Packo's.

EDIT: I looked it up, the casino is going to be in "East Toledo," which while close to downtown Toledo, is not downtown Toledo.

Here's information on downtown Toledo:
Downtown Toledo Improvement District Inc: Dining and Nightlife (http://www.downtowntoledo.org/dining_nightlife.php - broken link)
Now I suppose I can admit maybe Toledo isn't as great as I thought (not that I ever thought it was great), but I still think it offers a bit more than Fort Wayne.

With regards to Toldeo; overall Fort Wayne is better, but I just feel like downtown Toledo has more to offer and a much more urban feel, not to say that it's a good downtown either.
For one thing, what constitutes urban feel? Second, your whole argument about no one being downtown Fort Wayne over and over again, is beginning to make me think you just have something against Fort Wayne, never step out of your car when you are around, or either have never been in downtown or have not been here for several years. Your "experiences" just do not jive with reality in the last few years.

When I say urban feel I guess I just mean everything from driving style to just the looks of the city.

I moved away from Fort Wayne 2 years ago and am always there at least once a month. True, I didn't like Fort Wayne when I lived there, but there are reasons why. I guess the biggest reason is that there were always a large number of people who hated progress and change. If you remember when Harrison Square was propose, about 50% of people were against it. Many years ago when the downtown arena was proposed, most people were against it. It was just the lack of vision with the citizens and leaders that bothered me in Fort Wayne. The current project that was immediately shot down by most citizens and leaders was the idea of having a Casino downtown. While this Casino was never even allowed to be voted on because of the state government (another institution I have a problem with), it seemed as though public opinion was against it. I guess maybe the problem is that Fort Wayne is too conservative?

Many in Indianapolis also opposed a casino being built downtown. I have lived and spent a lot of time in the biggest city in Indiana with a downtown casino, Evansville. Has Casino Aztar turned Evansville's downtown into a thriving, vibrant downtown? No, not even a little bit. Sure, the block right by the casino and its parking garage is bustling, but one block does not a vibrant downtown make.

The development that is happening in downtown Evansville, away from the casino, has nothing to do with the casino. If you think a casino is going to magically turn Fort Wayne into Chicago, you have much to learn.

Note though, I am not suggesting Indianapolis and Fort Wayne should not have casinos. I think if Indianapolis were to get a casino, it should be well removed from downtown like Milwaukee's. Indianapolis does not need a casino downtown. A neighborhood like West Indianapolis, a casino could do a lot to help that area.

I don't think a casino is the magic solution to creating a vibrant downtown in Fort Wayne, but it's just a component that could help. I also don't think downtown Indianapolis should necessarily have a casino, but wouldn't it have been nice to ride on light rail from downtown to a casino on the west side (sorry it's off topic)?

time after time, casinos have proven that they are money makers... for the casinos, but the rest of the city suffers. Look at all the places along the West Virginia/Ohio border, depressed coal mining small cities with nothing, and a huge casino where people come, gamble, and leave.

And I could point to Temecula, CA as a nice city with a resort casino. I could probably name others, but that's the only city I've really been to that has only one casino and doesn't have an economy based on the gaming industry.

I understand that you don't mean basing the economy soley on the gaming industry is the answer. But, I also don't think it is ever a good idea for outside companies to come into a community and just drain the area of revenue, casinos are pretty infamous for doing that, especially in the midwest and eastern part of the country. It is easier for an area, like Temecula, where because of the wineries and other industries for a resort type of business to succeed because it that area is already a destination spot. I am sure the resort, and community as a whole, would do just fine without the casino based on their ability to bring in people from outside who don't want to gamble.
