Question Relocating to Fort Wayne area

We are relocating with a job located in the southeast side of Fort Wayne. Can anyone give us some information about the different areas? Schools, rental homes, the actual downtown boundaries? We have seen a lot of rental homes and adequate schools in the NE/NW side of Fort Wayne. Is this a good area to raise a child? Also, our 9 year old plays ice hockey- does anyone have any information on leagues, etc.? Any insight on the different areas would be greatly appreciated.

Well to be closer to work for you I would recommend the Southwest side of Fort Wayne. This is also where the best public schools are. There should also be a good amount of rental homes in the area.

To be honest, all parts of Fort Wayne are great to raise a family besides the Southeast side of Fort Wayne. The best schools are by far are in the Southwest and Northwest parts of the city, being SACS and NACS school districts respectively. The northeast side would feed into the East Allen County School district as well as parts of Fort Wayne Community schools. The northeast and southwest side would also be close to where your location is to work. There are newer home construction in all parts of the city besides the Southeast side.

As far as kid friendly, Fort Wayne is very desirable to raise a family for this alone. Many activities for kids to do and Fort Wayne is definitely into sports.

There is also a new, state-of-the-art hockey arena for kids/adults that is supposed to be done by January 2010. First of its kind in Indiana.

Some good replies above... to add to them, regarding the hockey, check out the following:

FtW has a quite strong hockey atmosphere - the minor league team winning cups, and again this year doing good. As the mentioned in the link in previous post above, there is a new rink opening up soon, including on-site hotel, on the NW side just south of Coliseum Blvd. between Fernhill Ave. and Lima Rd. It will have 3 sheets, while the older McMillan will also stay in use. Good article here too: https://www.insideindianabusiness.co...m.asp?ID=36596

Me, I'm much looking forward to this new arena... be ~20 minutes closer, and very nice surface, and all of the other attributes to it But for your SE location, McMillan would be closer... lol, all things considered, FtW is not that large, and is relatively easy to get around - unless you are not patient in traffic... like me

As to your question about good area to raise a child - yes, IMHO, you really can't go wrong in the NW or SW FtW general regions, or even some of the smaller communities around. As to the SE area, I can't answer to that, as have not had any knowledge of those schools.
