Default Vehicle Registration and Taxes?

Can I ask what you all pay in vehicle registration and taxes annually?

We just got our tax bills for our cars (which here in CT, comes from the town and is billed seperately from the DMV registration), and it got me wondering what we'd pay if we relocated.

Here the registration is $75 every two years and the taxes are annual based on the make/model/age of the vehicle. Ours are:
1998 RAV4: 198.28
2003 Matrix: 359.06

I'm hoping that TX isn't as expensive...am I right? I can only find registration info on the web and it looks to be around $50 annually...could that per chance include any vehicle taxes?

TIA! (and I hope you all are dry and safe with all the rain and flooding. Take care!)

1998 car will be 40$ and 2003 will be 50$. Inspection is around 40$(smog counties) 12$ elsewhere. They are all annual unless the car is new then inspection is good for two years. We don't pay property tax on cars annually.

Thanks Texnflyer! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear!

Kta - I bet that's what you're wanting to hear too...if my CT fees and taxes seem cheap, then TX must look awesome! To answer your question, the $75 every two years is just the registration sticker. We pay $20 for emissions inspection, which is also every two years. Then every year we pay our town/city the taxes that are based on year/make/model.

In Ohio I pay about $75 every year for a Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, don't have emissions where I live and don't pay property tax on it. When the truck was purchased I had to pay sales tax at about 6% or so.

I hope when we move down there next year it's comparable.

I paid $175 for my 98 escort - $90 was for being a new resident.

Texnflyer - is inspection every 2 yrs? My sticker has next yrs mo/yr so I thought it meant annual inspections.

If you buy a new car its good for two years only initially. After that its every year. I guess they figure a brand new car should at least make it two years before stuff breaks off.

I have a 1996 Honda, and it's slightly beat up. I am curious about the inspection. What does the inspection consist of? Can it be done at any auto repair shop? Thanks.

State inspections are done only by certified places and they have signs out front that state that. They check headlights, horn, brakes (they drive your car around the building once to see if they work), windshield wipers and hook it up to a computer that checks emissions to make sure it isn't polluting the air more than it should. That's about it. If it fails, they give you a certain amount of time to get whatever's wrong fixed so you can try again. Depending on where the inspection's performed, they might do the repairs for you. It's usually mechanic's shops, car dealers and oil change places that do inspections - places like that. It takes only 20 minutes or so.
