Many gorceries have their own bakeries on premises and although many others just buy from a wholesaler. Even in my locally owned chain, I can get any food item I could ever want (except lobsters), any cleaning supplies, books and magazines, and many household items like flashlights, screw drivers, etc. They also sell storage containers and cooking pots and pans and small appliances (Cuisinart, hair dryers), although not as big a selction as a Wal-Mart or Target. You are going to be amazed! I found it so quaint when I visited relatives in Paris and we had to go to so many different stores.

I visited a Tom Thumb store in Southlake last month on my only visit to Texas and although the store was large and had lots of stuff, I wasn't overly impressed with the fresh vegetables and fruit selection - what was there looked nice and fresh etc but the overall selection wasn't that great, quite a limited choice of vegetables in particular and I was amazed that a small punnet of mushrooms was $3.99 - that's outrageous! Equivalent here in UK would be approximately $1.60 - they were just ordinary mushrooms too, not "exotic"

A lot of things, particularly meat, seemed much cheaper than the UK though so I guess swings and roundabouts! Am really looking forward to moving and getting into my new adopted home and learning the Texan way!

Prices at Tom Thumb, Albertsons, etc tend to be quite high. Once you get here, you'll start to learn where to go for the best values on particular items.

Kroger will soon be opening their Kroger Marketplace concept store in Fort Worth... I believe they are acttually larger than Super Walmarts and Super Targets...

In addition to expanded grocery, deli, floral, organic, gourmet and chef-prepared foods, the store will have a wine shop. Its general merchandise categories are bed, bath, kitchen, tabletop and an Ashley-branded furniture department. There will also be a Fred Meyer Jewelers inside the store. The stores are twice the size of a Kroger Signature store and have fuel centers in the parking lot and drive-through pharmacies.

Yes and the Alliance (N. Ft. Worth) location opens mid-January!

Excellent, sounds like I won't be short of choices if I am prepared to travel around a little then.

Many thanks all.
