I used to work for Nordstrom. When Nordstrom expanded into the DFW market, they originally had plans for a 5th store at Hulen Mall. Once the economy started to decline and the reccession hit, the 2nd Austin store was pushed back to indefinitely and these plans were completely scrapped.

when Nordstrom's was built built--the NE Mall was on upsurge as was that part of Tarrant county--that was before Southlake's Town Center was completed and people started moving outwards--to Haslet/Keller area (that has drawn lot of people out of the Midcities area--and people are willing to drive further like to Frisco/Plano at times to shop--certainly to Southlake Center if it has stores you want...

since then the towns around the Mall have seen their demographics slide---
there is still money to be made there -- the stores that are closing have had problems for long time and it might not even be their locations here that are losing money

I don't shop Nordstrom's though--and I don't know why other people do
except for their shoe dept which is one of best around--their clothing does not offer lot of selection--
their makeup you can get pretty much anywhere except for one line (have a friend who uses it and Nordstom's is the only local source) and they are overpriced--

What are you talking about? They have a great selection of clothes, including many lines that aren't available at many other retailers like Marc by Marc Jacobs, John Varvatos, etc. Their prices aren't as high as Barney's and they used to be the only place to buy the high end brand Faconnable (well after the NP boutique was closed and before the Galleria one opened)

There are several brands that typical lower end department stores don't cary, and they're not pretentious like the upper end department stores are, so for me Nordstrom is the perfect fit right in the middle. And customer service is superb!

I watched NE mall being built...used to play in the vacant lot it was prior. I worked retail and retail management from 1977 through 1990.

In the 80's and 90's there were scores of
- teens wandering malls full of mischief, there to socialize-not to shop
- SAHM's who would come with their babies-preschoolers in strollers to window shop and socialize-not to shop
- retired folks mall walking-not to shop
- preteens dropped off for 'group dates'-not to shop

All those groups that fill the malls today, filled them 20-30 years ago. Their backgrounds may be more varied and therefore more obvious, but it's still the same types groups doing the same types of things.

The shoplifting groups existed in great numbers then and now, you just hear about them far more now. (I could tell you all kinds of stories about a certain group that would just make you cringe)

While total numbers may be higher, percentage wise I doubt very seriously there are more thefts, personal attacks and vandalism today than 30 years ago.

NE Mall has never been a high end mall. The typical customer who shops there is the average family with average income. The customers with exclusively high end tastes has never been a consistent shopper at NE Mall. If anything more of those shop there today with the addition of Nordstrom's and Macy's.

I think North East Mall will be fine, It looks packed every time I pass by on the weekends.

Along I-35, and west of it, retail centers have been popping up everywhere. Look at Lake Worth, small place, but it used all up all of its space for retail, and also has 2 movie theaters.

The Hulen area has seen some big developments these past years. They have a mall on I-20 and I-30. Near Ridgmar Mall, all those stores opening up.

Excluding downtown Fort Worth, West 7th, Southlake Center, Arlington, leaving out many others. All I'm trying to say is I think people are shopping locally. Before many of these developments, residents didn't have too many places to choose from, that's why I think NE mall isn't bringing in much foot traffic like it used to.

I have to agree... I shop Nordstrom all the time and customer service is first rate - especially when compared to Macy's.

I thought the reason Nordstrom didn't enter Hulen was because when Hulen was remodled Dillard's kicked in so much money that they got the final say so on any new anchors coming to Hulen and they said "No".

I don't shop Norstrom's because I don't wear their clothes--and neither does my husband--so really have no reason to shop there
not because I don't think they have good customer service--

I remember hearing what you're referring to also.

And I, too, love Nordstrom. I was in the one in Chicago just last week. (glad I'm not in Chicago today!) I love the store and love shopping online from them.

I don't have a comment about NE Mall. I have never been inside it...only to Nordstrom.

I can't ignore what I see when I go
I do worry about groups/gangs of youths--some as young as 10-13-- in the mall without any adult supervision--most of them look like they have no object but to eat at the food court and act stupid with their friends-
they don't have any business there because they AREN'T shopping--they are using the Mall (out of the elements, out of their houses, out of supervision) to cruise around checking on friends, flirting, probably shoplifting---and in general getting in people's way...I imagine their parents or older brother/friend just dropped them off for the day--maybe don't even know they are there--

It used to be unusual to have shoppers from any ethnic group==not now--they are the majority of the strollers you see--especially at night the times I have been there

I don't care about the ethnicity necessarily--there used to be Anglo kids shoplifting and causing problems years ago-

but I would be happy to see more evidence of security guards especially during the week in daylight just as preventative measure--but think sales are down and the merchants don't want to pay for them...

have never had my car vandalized--but there are times when I am glad my husband is walking with me in the mall at night--and we don't go to the mall at night very often...

I still disagree with you. I spent a lot of time playing in the "Tilt" at Northeast Mall when I was a kid. My friends and I would wonder around the mall aimlessly for hours, catch a movie, and do anything except actually "shop." That's been happening FOREVER and it happens at all malls, not just this one.

As I said, I'm not really in that area anymore, but when I am the mall still seems busy. I've never once been scared to be anywhere near that mall. Do I see hoodrat kids walking around the premises without reason? Yes. But that's always been the case. It doesn't mean they are vandalizing cars, shoplifting, or trying to hurt people. They're typically just 14 year olds with nothing better to do.

And not that it matters, but Hurst is still 75% white, FWIW.
