Guingirl: If the job transfer comes through, my husband will likely go out first and I'll follow with the kids a few months later. That way, we can take our time looking around to make sure we pick the right house and right area for us. I'm sure he'll get lots of recommendations from co-workers on where to look as well.

I've seen a few houses for sale in Lost Creek Estates, just to the west of Fort Worth. They look nice (of course, just about anything looks nice online, with the right photographer) and they seem to be a decent commute to JRB. I know the mailing address is Aledo but they are actually in Fort Worth. Does anyone have any insight on those? Most of the houses seem to be a little older than we were originally considering but, still, they might be a viable option.

I have friends who live in Lost Creek and they commute in to Fort Worth to work every day. Their kids went to All Saints Episcopal on the west side of Fort Worth (it's a private school). They love it out there....were some of the original owners. They are Episcopalians and wanted their kids to go to All Saints....otherwise, they would have been at Aledo.

The Aledo school district is great, IMO.

Awesome...sounds like you have a good handle on it. We visited twice for a week at a time before my mom found a home first in the area and absolutely had to buy it.

I can't tell you how many I printed off, drove by and went "meh" nice house, but crappy neighborhood. Good luck and I hope it goes through.

There have been many times at night, we look up and see the stars outside, breathe everything in and are so happy that we decided to make the choice to move here. We absolutely love it! We feel blessed that we can give our kids such a great place to grow up.

We did that too! our wish list was 1/2acre to acre. Like we had in PA (after living in VA on a postage stamp I was done!)
So many "nice" houses came up in Woodland Springs on 1/2-3/4 acre. BUT, when we saw the neighobrhood and area we scratched that whole area off the list.

On flip same was Haslet for US, (it is very nice and glad guingirl loves it) Waht we found (in our range) was BEAUTIFUL homes on an acre. However it was neighborhoods of new houses plopped down in fields. Not many trees, and really no privacy (what we wanted the acre for)
Also... the HS, new driver with dark back roads etc...the HS is a haul from some areas.
Rhome had some very nice properties with trees etc...but that was pretty far out for us.

Aledo...Loved it!! Loved the McDavid neighborhoods. Large lots, 1+ acre, mix of new and older homes, some hills and Trees etc... Good schools.
Commute was a bit far for us however AND having a child entering HS the next year, it was a bit "remote" from "Entertainment." IF we had not had older kids we were TRYING to make as happy as possible with a relo. We would have probably ended up here.

We ended up in Keller on a 1/3 acre corner lot in the back of a small subdivision with a community pool.
Mature trees and green spaces, houses do not feel "stacked" on top of each other. Some lots in our neighborhood are 1/2 acre+ and some interior are 1/4 acre, alot are 1/3 acre.
It is right down the road from the HS, close to Sotuhlake Towncenter ofr movies, dinner and shopping (all those things teenage girls love!!) Walking distance to the Keller pointe and Bear Creek park.
(plus we have horses behind us and cows down the road...so I get my little bit of "county feeling &sounds"!! (Someday...I will be back on a ranch)

So as everyone said...make you list and put your "priorites' on top. Then you will have to strike out whats less important. IE Community pool verses an Acre+ of land. Close to community services vs. "country life!" etc...

Commute form any of the place you mentioned wont be too bad. But drive it when you are here looking. I owuld visit the base around 4pm and then drive to the outlying areas at around 5-6pm (evening commute is worse)

Schools...the areas you are looking...Northwest ISD(NWISD) Keller ISD(KISD) and Aledo ISD. ALL have VERY good schools. HS can get a bit more complicated...but you say you have "young kids" and being military, you will most likly be gone before HS! So I will go out on a limb...and say ALL the elementary schools in those districts are excellent.

Weatherford..very nice small town but I think it will be well over the desired 30 minute commute.

Benbrook...I know nothing about sorry.

Burleson may be another option for you, but again I really know nothing about it.

5stones: Your subdivision sounds exactly like what I want. I think a 1/3-1/2 acre is MORE than enough. My husband THINKS he likes the idea of an acre but I think mowing it will get old very quickly, even if he gets that riding mower he wants. I would love a house with trees as well. Can you PM me the name of your subdivision? I’d like to check out what’s available. As far as priorities go, I’d definitely rather have a community/HOA pool (not one in my back yard!) than a big piece of land!
I also have concerns about growing kids and living in a remote area with not much to do. My father was in the Navy and I grew up on bases with plenty of extracurricular opportunities. He retired when I was in high school and we moved to a small town. All the kids, no matter their social group (academic, stoners, athletes, religious, etc.,) did drugs and slept around, frankly because there wasn’t much else to do. I’d like to live in an area with plenty of activities to keep the family busy. Plus, I like to be close to all the conveniences of the city.
We do have young kids (8 and 2) but we are no longer military. I retired from the military about 4 years ago, my husband about 2 years ago. I’m now a consultant and he is in civil service. This job would be a relocation via civil service. There is nothing keeping us in Virginia other than our jobs which is why we looking to move closer to family. I don’t know if this will be our last move, but we are definitely looking at it being a very long term move. I can definitely see us being there when our kids go to high school and on to college.
