We are moving to FW at the end of this month and I'm a little concerned about things to do... We enjoy hiking, vegetarian food, visiting breweries and cute little shops and things. I have the impression that the Stockyards is "the" big thing there. Any areas or specific ideas that seem like things we'd like? We'll be living in Arlington Heights. THANKS!

Rahr brewery has tours--it is in downtown FTW off 7th st I think--Google it

there are wineries in Grapevine area east of FTW

Sundance Sq and So7 downtown and across the river are usually full of people day and night
the Museum district has several different types of art to choose from--MOMA has great restaurant and does independent film once a monthor so
FTW Cats will start their season soon--local baseball team with stadium just north of downtown

Just Google Fort Worth and "tourist" and see what crops up

You are concerned because there might not be things "to do"? There are things to do in every city, but it just might not be what you had where you moved from. I don't know why people expect it to be the same where they came from. Just embrace what FW has to offer. Not sure why you have the impression or who told you that the Stockyards is the thing to do, because it isn't true. Please don't take offense, it isn't my intention...anyway, there are plenty of things to do, L2R mentioned alot already. If these things don't suit you, there are breweries in Austin (oh, and Rahr Brewery is south of downtown, on Galveston St. just west of Main St.) and wineries all over TX, and some are an hour or less from FW. Check out tripleblaze.com to find the best hiking trails in Texas...there are some in Grapevine, Denton, Dallas and Glen Rose as well as a few others. There are shops everywhere, 7th St, Camp Bowie, Magnolia Ave, etc. As for the vegetarian thing, sorry can't help you there....maybe someone else can. Good luck.

I will also be moving to Fort Worth soon and am a vegetarian. On my last trip there, I stopped by Spiral Diner in Fort Worth (on West Magnolia Avenue). The entire menu is vegan and amazing. The desserts are good as well. I tried just about every cookie they had! Hope you enjoy!

I also really enjoyed Sundance Square. We walked in and out a few of the shops there and picked up a few trinkets.

New Residents

Moving to Texas?

New residents moving into Texas, who are at least 16 years or older and have a valid driver license from another state, have 90 days after entry into the state to secure a Texas Driver License. All out-of-state applicants must visit a Texas Driver License office to present and complete the following:

Complete the requirements for an original applicant.
If you have a VALID out-of-state license in your possession, please bring it to the driver license office to surrender. The written and driving examinations will be waived, but you must still pass a vision exam.
If you have a VALID out-of-state driver license, or a VALID out-of-country driver license from France, Canada, or Germany, in your possession, please bring it to the driver license office to surrender. The written and driving examinations will be waived, but you must still pass a vision exam.

I sure thought it was 30 days...not sure if that has changed since we moved here.

About halfway down this page is more info:
TxDPS - Apply for Driver License/ID card

Have ORIGINAL ID documents, if possible...they don't like copies .

Dog About Town:
Honoring St. Francis and more activities this weekend | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Pets | Dallas Morning News
In Richardson, I'd recommend calling Jaleo/The Barcelona Connection.
It's in Galatyn Park off 75, between Campbell and Renner,
right across from the Eisemann Center.
Ample veggie selections and a sangria to die for.
(They have the two name things going because people keep thinking it's a Tex Mex joint.)

There is a huge field just steps away so a bathroom trip is easy.

In Richardson you may try Marcus Cafe in Canyon Creek,
off Custer and just S of Renner.
Lots of people walking around the neighborhood w/ their dogs and they sometimes
pop in for a drink... it's usually a pretty casual vibe.

Always call ahead to verify. I've learned that dog friendly is often code for small dog friendly
--even if that small dog isn't so friendly itself, so even if you have the most well behaved
big dog, it's a bit harder.

Need to Add:

++++++++++++++++++++
Saturday morning is the Tour Dallas - there will be road closures
on Turtle Creek, Swiss and streets around the lake.
Tour Dallas: Routes
Tour Dallas: Routes
++++++++++++++++++++++++

Highland Park / Central Dallas
You could see a movie at the Angelika at Mockingbird Station
eat at Margarita Ranch for lunch/dinner.
Go across Central to SMU's Meadows Museum.
Drive down Beverly Drive to Exall Lake on Beverly and Lakeside.
Go up to Highland Park Village at Mockingbird and Preston.
Shopping? NorthPark at Park Lane and Northwest Highway-- lots of cool shops there too.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
East Dallas
Bakers Ribs for every kind of good BBQ.
Then off to White Rock Lake and the Arboretum.
Drive down Swiss Avenue or go to the home tour of 1920’s mansions.
Eat at Neighborhood Services Tavern , The Porch, Tei Tei Robata Bar for dinner.
Stroll around the antique stores on the Knox side.
Have some custard at Wild About Harrys.
Or
instead of eating on the Henderson (East) side. Eat at Toulouse on the Katy Trail.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Uptown/Downtown
Have breakfast at Lucky’s on Oak Lawn.
Go to the Dallas World Aquarium and the Nasher.
Eat at Urban Taco on McKinney.
Walk around West Village.
Head to Frankie’s Sports Bar on McKinney for drinks.

You can park pretty much anywhere in Dallas.
Most restaurants/bars in Uptown have valet,
but if you can find street parking, park there.
Valet is around $5 or a $5 tip.

My short list for you would be:
Culture- visit the Nasher Sculpture Garden,
which is downtown. A gem of a collection!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Eating- In Deep Ellum, recommend
All-Good Cafe for laid back breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Twisted Root makes a fantastic burger!
Local is fabulous, more expensive market driven menu,
but worth $50-75/pp for dinner.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

In Uptown,
Ginger Man,
TABC, &
he Londoner
are all laid back bars with great patios
since the weather is going to be gorgeous this weekend.
The Common Table is good for dinner & had a good patio, too.
Breadwinner's and Dream Cafe are classic Dallas brunch spots.
The bar at the Ritz Carlton cannot be beat for "very Dallas" people watching.
S&D Oyster has been around forever and is good seafood.

++++++++++++

Uptown is accessible via the FREE McKinney Avenue Trolley.
You can walk from your hotel to the DMA downtown
& catch the trolley there.

Most all the Uptown spots I named are either on or near McKinney Ave.
Walkable from the trolley for sure!

+++++++++++

North Oak Cliff is worth visiting too-
about 8 minutes west of downtown.
You'd need to drive or call a cab.
Bolsa is one of Dallas' best restaurants,
great market menu at affordable prices. Good patio!
Tillman's has a funky menu (check it online), but is fun & good.
Eno's is great pizza. After eating, go over to the Belmont Hotel
and enjoy drinks on their patio with a killer skyline view.

++++++++++

Belmont also has a great restaurant, Smoke, good for brunch or dinner.
The Belmont often has live music or movie nights by the pool so check their website for events.
Super laid back and friendly place to hang out. If it's daylight,
drive through Kessler Park (Colorado Blvd from Sylvan to Hampton)-
gorgeous 1920's mansions of the Tudor and Mediterranean variety and some cool
mid century moderns tucked up in the hills.

++++++++

The art spaces on dragon street are having opening exhibition parties on Saturday night.
Try
Samuel Lynne Galleries
Craig-Head Green
1111 Studios
Samuel Lynne Galleries - Dragon Street, Dallas TX

Deep Ellum
Lizard Lounge
Absinthe Lounge
The Beauty Bar,
Station Four (S4)
Plush.

++++++++++

The Dallas World Aquarium - www.dwazoo.com

++++++++

Ttry going to The MAC,
Dallas Contemporary, and
Goss-Michael Art Foundation.

+++++++++++
Actually
the Absinthe is in Southside on Lamar
(Gilley's is also there if you are into that..)
Absinthe is in a basement like an old speakeasy.
A really cool place to go (in the same neighborhood)
Sunday afternoon is Lee Harvey's - 214-428-1555
+++++++++
If you'd rather see more a of Dallas 'scene' on Sunday
and stay in Uptown try Primo's Bar & Grille,
3309 McKinney Ave. Dallas, TX 75204
(214) 220-0510 Tex-Mex Restaurant,
Make Reservations Today on McKinney.

++++++++++++

Nasher Sculpture Center is free until noon or 2pm on Sat - first Sat is free.

Intersting/good places to eat:
Samar,
Victor Tango, Taco Diner, All Good.
Great coffee at Pearl Cup or Stir.

from:
People of texas super friendly!! Truly a blessing!!!
man. Many of us are certain that we will be punished eventually for being crappy
(the golden rule, what come's around goes around, karma, et al) to others.
Then there is the fact that with over 300 days of sunshine we get much more
natural vitamin D than residents of the northern states.

At any rate to the OP and other transplants that have chimed in;
welcome to Texas, we're glad to have you and make sure you get
all over this state because outside of snow skiing we do have everything;
forests, mountains, white sandy coastlines, bayous, high deserts,
hill country and of course the rolling prairies of North Texas.

Have ORIGINAL ID documents, if possible...they don't like copies .

dog-friendly restaurants Page 13

++++++++++++++++++++
Saturday morning is the Tour Dallas - there will be road closures
on Turtle Creek, Swiss and streets around the lake.
Tour Dallas: Routes
Tour Dallas: Routes
++++++++++++++++++++++++

++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Eating- In Deep Ellum, recommend
All-Good Cafe for laid back breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Twisted Root makes a fantastic burger!
Local is fabulous, more expensive market driven menu,
but worth $50-75/pp for dinner.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

In Uptown,
Ginger Man,
TABC, &
he Londoner
are all laid back bars with great patios
since the weather is going to be gorgeous this weekend.

++++++++++++

Uptown is accessible via the FREE McKinney Avenue Trolley.
You can walk from your hotel to the DMA downtown
& catch the trolley there.

Most all the Uptown spots I named are either on or near McKinney Ave.
Walkable from the trolley for sure!

+++++++++++

++++++++++

++++++++

The art spaces on dragon street are having opening exhibition parties on Saturday night.
Try
Samuel Lynne Galleries
Craig-Head Green
1111 Studios
Samuel Lynne Galleries - Dragon Street, Dallas TX

Deep Ellum
Lizard Lounge
Absinthe Lounge
The Beauty Bar,
Station Four (S4)
Plush.

++++++++++

The Dallas World Aquarium - www.dwazoo.com

++++++++

Ttry going to The MAC,
Dallas Contemporary, and
Goss-Michael Art Foundation.

+++++++++++
Actually
the Absinthe is in Southside on Lamar
(Gilley's is also there if you are into that..)
Absinthe is in a basement like an old speakeasy.
A really cool place to go (in the same neighborhood)
Sunday afternoon is Lee Harvey's - 214-428-1555
+++++++++
If you'd rather see more a of Dallas 'scene' on Sunday
and stay in Uptown try Primo's Bar & Grille,
3309 McKinney Ave. Dallas, TX 75204
(214) 220-0510 Tex-Mex Restaurant,
Make Reservations Today on McKinney.

++++++++++++

At any rate to the OP and other transplants that have chimed in;
welcome to Texas, we're glad to have you and make sure you get
all over this state because outside of snow skiing we do have everything;
forests, mountains, white sandy coastlines, bayous, high deserts,
hill country and of course the rolling prairies of North Texas.

that is a great list--but surely that info is available to anyone with a computer and Internet access

I just don't see the need to reinvent the wheel on this forum

for the OP to even post that s/he is moving to FTW this month and does NOT have an idea of what there is to do in the area shows lack of curiosity or effort

who would move anywhere without doing some investigation of points of interest/activities

Um you'll find all that and lots more. I live in Houston, and I know there is WAYYY more than just the stockyards in FTW. We busy spend weekends there and I have never even been to the stockyards.
