How come Fort Worth doesn't seem to have many people interested in it as the other large cities in Texas? If you go to the Austin board or the San Antonio board, there are tons of more threads. Why doesn't Fort Worth garner the same type of attention that Dallas gets?

Hey, trd,
I don't know why there's so much action on the Dallas site, because I think Fort Worth is the best large Texas city. I loved Fort Worth the few times I've been there. I built a trip around Fort Worth this summer, and it is always a lot of fun. (I also spent a couple days in one of the stone cabins on the rim of the Palo Duro Canyon, which was spectacular and highly recommended!) I spend time in Texas every summer, and although I haven't seen the Big Bend area or El Paso yet, I've seen a lot of Texas. Someday I may move there, and Fort Worth is at the top of my list. While Dallas seemed so much more like the Northeast where I'm from- rude people in a hurry, not a lot of joy on the streets, angry drivers- Fort Worth is another story. When I first heard about how different Dallas and Fort Worth were, I thought it was a lot of public relations hype. However, having come to know and love both cities in entirely different ways, I have to say hands down my favorite city is FW. It's so relaxed and friendly, and laid out nicely. I love the parks and open spaces, and the Trinity River Trail. I'm an artist, and I loved the juxtaposition of cowboy ambiance with urban sophistication and cultural and art-related events. The art museums are superb, and although I recently reverted to vegetarianism again, another look at a Kincaid's cheeseburger would sent me right back to carnivore heaven! Best burger in the Universe! Dinner on the roofdeck at the Reata Restaurant during a festival is also a lot of fun. The best thing of all is the people, however; they are unpretentious, friendly and fun-loving. As much as I enjoyed Dallas, the best part about being in Dallas for me is that you know Fort Worth is only a few short minutes away! |

As a native Fort Worthian, I must agree that my opinion is that Fort Worth is the best place to be. We are more laid back, and we're always willing to answer any questions yall might have, but I can't tell you why there's not more activity on the Fort Worth thread. In short, I'd have to fully agree with Farouche.

I lived in Ft. Worth for over 20 years and I also feel that is the best large city in Texas. First in culture, first in friendliness, less crime and traffic than the other larger cities. At least 3 of the top museums in the nation. Wealthy citizens plow their money back into the city, hence the Bass Brothers skyscrapers downtown, The new concert hall, the Sid Richardson art in the downtown area. If I didn't have family obligations in East Texas, Ft. Worth is the place I would be.

Thanks everyone. I thought I was crazy for liking Fort Worth the few times I have been there. My wife and I are considering moving to Texas and I am trying to talk her into FW but am having a lot of trouble because she keeps reading all these great things about Austin. Any ideas on how to sell her on it??

Well, I'll try. Austin is in a beautiful area but so is Ft. Worth, in my opinion. Austin is a youth oriented city with the university and other schools of higher learning there. Ft. Worth has TCU but is not so youth oriented. Austin is (how I shall I say it) weird. In fact the signs and T-shirts all over town say "Keep Austin Weird". It is the most liberal city in Texas in politics with not much in the way of culture. Ft. Worth is much more staid and refined, with some of the top museums in the nation, although it has the cow-town image and great night life.
It is all according to what you want and how old you are, but to me, Austin is much too youth oriented and un-refined (if that is a word). I wish that I could explain it better, but the two cities just have a different feel to me, and Ft. Worth wins out. I personally think that you will find Austin to be a little more expensive to live the same life style than in Ft. Worth. |

I have a friend at work who came here from Philadelphia. He told me the other day that the hardest thing he has had to deal with is how friendly people are here in Texas, specifically Fort Worth.

I live in Ft Worth and have lived in Dallas, and for me there is just no comparison. Farouche's post is pretty accurate. Fort Worth is "where the West begins"; Dallas is where the East peters out. Dallas has some good stuff too; it's just unfortunate that it has to be stuck in the traffic in Dallas. I think of Dallas as a big city, while Fort Worth is a big town. Downtown and the Arts District in Fort Worth are far superior, IMO.

The reason Forth Worth isn't very popular is not only is it a slow, ugly city, but most people have never even heard of it. Before I moved here, I thought Fort Worth was a local person or thing Dallas had named its airport after.
