Oh, how I'd love to have a nice family-owned grocery store like that around the corner from where I live. The closest grocery store to me is Fiesta, which sucks because their frozen foods aren't always frozen and their dairy products aren't always kept cold. The next closest store is Albertson's by TCU, and I hate having to drive over there just to get a couple of frozen pizzas.
Of all the big grocers I prefer Kroger, but it's the furthest one from where I live.

That's it. I love Roy Pope, its amazing and has great meat, deli, and produce departments. I get their to-go meals quite frequently, they're delicious.

I shop at Kroger, I prefer it to Albertson's. I like Tom Thumb but they are expensive.
Whole Foods and Central Market are both originally out of Austin. I love Whole Foods, there is one near me on Lamar and N. Collins in Arlington. And Central Market had alot of world-wide products that you won't find in a regular store.

My Favorite is Sprouts Farmers Market. I go to the one in Southlake, but there's a few others in the metroplex. Sprouts is alot like Whole Foods, except without the annoying hippie vibe. And the best part is that their prices are actually cheaper than a regular grocery store, and much cheaper than whole foods.
In addition to a huge selection of fruits/veggies, they also sell all sorts of other healthy foods, including farm raised meats. They also make a variety of delicious, healthy sausages, right there on site.
Every time I go there I'm always amazed at how you get such high quality food, for considerably less than a regular store like Kroger or Albertsons. It's a bit out of the way, but worth the drive.

Whole Foods is pretty much my preference. They set my standard for quality of produce and organics.
I don't have a Sprouts that's convenient but my girlfriend does and she loves it. Central Market's ok, (good food bar) but they are the easily the priciest.
Healthy Approach, small store in Colleyville off 121 is great, friendly place. They're like a mini WF and while some of their stuff is actually cheaper it does balance out.
As far as big chains go, I try to avoid them, but I'll go to a nearby Kroger sometimes. They have some similar brands as WF, but that doesn't mean they are cheaper, in fact I'd say I pay more at Krogers. I tried out Market Street, they seemed like a glorified Tom Thumb or something. Same stuff, better looking store.

Medicare patients accepted in Austin?
Hi,
We were considering Austin as a place to retire and then my husband saw an article on AOL stating that lots of doctors do not accept Medicare patients. I work for the federal government and will elect for a supplement for Medicare but would I have trouble finding a doctor because of my Medicare card when I receive it????

Hi - I would definately ask in the Austin section, but my Mom is on Medicare and while she hasn't been able to find a ton of doctors up here in DFW, she has found some very nice ones to help her that do accept Medicare.
