Hi there,

We're considering Texas to start our family and would like to see a bit of the state. We'll have 1 week, from early january, arriving at DFW and renting a car. We'll spend a couple of nights in the Fortworth area, after which we'd like to see a bit of what's around Fort Worth and south towards San Antonio. No rush to drive, and it seems like 281 is a nice option. Would consider stopping between the two cities overnight if there are any interesting towns that would be good for starting a family. Will be traveling with wife and 1 year old, portable crib, and happy to stay at two star hotels. Will also be looking for good steak.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

It's worth noting that there's as much of a chance that you could see 70 degrees and sunny in January as you could ice. Maybe even in the same week.

281 is a very nice alternative to I-35. It's not especially scenic in the winter and you are going to get stopped at red lights in every town, but it beats fighting through the occasional awful traffic between Austin and Waco.

281 is a much better drive than I35 with the construction mess.

Marble Falls is a good place to stop for a meal and an overnight stay. The Bluebonnet Cafe is great home cooking food and delicious pies. I've stayed at both the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express there, and they are both nice.

Honestly, though, I wouldn't move a family to a town on 281. These are smaller towns that have less jobs/opportunity, and a fair amount of their economy is based on tourism and have a high retiree population. If you want to move your family to Texas, you should look at the bigger cities: San Antonio, DFW, or Houston.

For good steak, I'd go to Reata in Fort Worth. It's a unique place (not a nationwide chain) and they do serve excellent steaks.

I agree that the Hampton Inn in Marble falls is a good motel.I have stayed in it and it was a very pleasant experience.
