Counseling Opportunities
I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and am currently wrapping up my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Psychology. I know that I want to go into counseling but I am not sure of the area that I want to specialize in. I am trying to decide if it would be better to get a MSW or M.A. in Counseling. Can anybody tell me which degree would be more versatile? Also, what is the job market like in DFW for new graduates?

what is your college telling you about that decision
admittedly I don't put a lot of faith in counseling from college or professors but sometimes you get someone who has been out in the real world and come back to teach and those people are usually fairly well informed about what is smart decision...
there was article in the FTW paper recently about people who are finishing their certifications in addiction counseling and how the person teaching the class is trying to help them prepare to deal with all the failures they will have since probably most of the people they counsel will relapse and become active addicts--either via alcohol/drinking or other drug use...but that is only one professional path open in Psychology/counseling
this if job posted on Monster for BA psychology that will help pay toward the MA
Find Jobs - Mental Health Advocate Jobs in Dallas, TX
this one is for MSW and for working with youth home facility
Youth Villages - Family Counselor
and this is MSW and working on American military base in Germany under a two year contract
this one if for MA in psy or MSW
Find Jobs - Member Advocate III (Full-Time) Jobs in Lewisville, TX
this one requiring MSW is also asking for experience in NICU--whch is neonatal intensive care--premies-- and probably counseling families about infants that might have birth anomolies or early birth complications...and other issues like stress in general...
Social Worker MSW
this one from a dialysis company
DaVita - Social Worker LMSW / DaVita UTSW Oakcliff / Dallas / Texas
so just in looking for a short time it seems that most MSW jobs involve hospital or business--corporate work enviornment
Find Jobs - LCSW-Care Manager - IN GERMANY Jobs in Dallas, TX

I graduated in San Marcos with M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance and am working in the Austin area as an LPC. I'd go with the social work master's program if I could do it again. They no longer hire LPCs in hospitals here - only social workers. Also reciprocity moving from state to state with a social work degree is easier than the counseling program - which varies considerably and might require taking a lot of additional coursework to gain a license in another state. Check out that information and best of luck to you!
p.s. BTW, you are not going to get rich in this field!

I agree with followsdogs. I completed masters in psych counseling almost ten years ago and am now completing a phd in clinical psyc. With a masters degree, you will have more job flexibility as a social worker.

I am currently enrolled in an LPC masters program. I have been debating whether or not to switch my degree to social work. When I found out that I would have to be supervised for 4000 hrs AFTER completing my degree in order to sit for the LPCC I was devastated. I want to perform therapy/direct counseling and eventually working in private practice. I also have my BSN and am currently working as an ICU nurse. I love school but this is getting ridiculous. I just want to be "billable"! What program should I pursue in order to be a COUNSELOR. Does anyone have any suggestions?

talk to your advisor in your master's program
talk to someone in your hospital admin staff if it has a counseling type of program

I'v been a clinical social worker for the last 18 years. New Master level grad. attn.; be prepared to undergo 2-3 years of supervised clinical practice before you are eligible to pursue independent clinical practice. If you have good business skills including marketing skill but most importantly sound clincial skills then considering private practice maybe viable. My encouragement is not to focus on the specific degree; ie. MSW, MA, or license, LCSW, LPC but to ensure you have mastered sound clinical expertise.

Bedford, PA Looking for apartment, close to high school, horses
My daughter is moving to Bedford, she will be working at the High School. I came across this web site, and noticed some other individuals are trying to find rentals as well. She is employed by Franklin and Marshall College, and is interested in finding a small apartment close to the high school. We have horses, and she is hoping to find a place to ride.
