Find a Good Neighborhood
Hello there, good luck in your search. I live a couple miles south of Mansfield and unfortunately it is a little "redneck still". My husband is hispanic and still finds it a closed minded area, but the north part of Mansfield looks to be a better site and I hear the schools are good and the neighborhood looks beautiful. You just take Highway 287 out of the area. When I moved to Dallas in 1990, I asked a couple policemen where was the safest town in the metroplex and they all said Mansfield.

I would go with Keller. It is very nice and very family-oriented. They have awesome schools and really nice houses in your price range. They are growing A LOT, so they have a lot of stores and restaurants as well.
Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for your posts. Some went South, but life goes on. Many of you were my voice. Thanks. Still have not decided where to call home. Looked at Saginaw. Saw the 2 "monuments" just about everywhere. Looked at Lake Worth and talked with residents. They didn't have good things to say about schools. Liked Keller but read other posts about the trains along 377. So, again help. All posts are appreciated. Will check out HEB on my next visit.

How many white people are getting shot in south LA?
Okay. Now, how many minorities are getting shot in south LA?
Just checking.

You're right. They TOTALLY didn't spray slurs on that man's garage door.

HEB is a very ethnically diverse area--while I can't promise you it is a perfect environment
as a teacher I have seen that most students mix well with others--there really does not seem to be much animosity and there are mixed racial couples--there are also kids in high school (age I taught) that hang mostly with their own
from what I saw in school most "bashing" is towards gays/homosexual boys vs girls...
and there have been assaults in the area on gays in past years...
there are people living in apartments and homes of many ethnic backgrounds...whether or not they experience acceptance or rejection from their neighbors I could not really say
I know that Martin Methodist Church in Bedford had an AA asst pastor for a while (he is also vice principal at one the HEB ISD schools)--his sermons were so well attended they had to move them to a larger chapel...he left that post because he is working on his PhD
in my neighborhood there are maybe three AA families--one of them has lived here as long as we have -- over 20- yrs--his son went to school with our daughter and while they are not our friends--they have certainly not gone through any overt hazing over the years...

There are PLENTY of neighborhoods in Keller that aren't bothered by the train.
And since you are going to be working west of 377 I'd look over in NW FTWORTH for neighborhood a few miles west of the "tracks" and that feed into Central HS.
HEB is a solid district and more diverse both economicaly and ethnically than other areas around it. I personally like Bedford and Hurst better than Euless. But your commute to Carswell will not be as good as other areas.
Trophey club in NW ISD is a nice town and has good schools as well.
Good luck.

MsMae,
I am an Black woman living in Keller. My husband and I have 4 children. We decided to move here when I was expecting our first child. We love the area!!
Let me say that racism is everywhere you go...just in smaller doses in some places. I see it's found it's way on this message board...what a shame. With that said, it's been very minimal in our case.
In schools my children are most often the only Black children in their classrooms. It's not a big deal at all. We get along very well with everyone and have had only a few occassions of ignorance. With anything, you just have to teach your children how to handle sometimes uncomfortable situations.
When someone says something to me or a child of mine out of ignorance or pure curiosity, I simply answer with a smile. The fact is that we are different. We embrace our differences and are happy to educate those not fortunate enough to have had Black friends before. LOL
Carswell is not a bad drive from Keller at all. You can take 35S to 820W, then exit Jacksboro highway going South. There is a back entrance to Carswell, but I don't remember the name of the street. Anyhow, you would love this area. Wether you live in Keller proper or Northeast Fort Worth having Keller schools. It's clean and family friendly.
E-mail me privately if you choose. I don't mind being frank and candid with you.

That's awful, and I can't believe that's still happening in this day and age. Just so you know, Carswell is in the West side of Fort Worth. I used to work right by there. $260K is going to get you a REALLY nice house in Fort Worth, and if you are in a nice neighborhood, you aren't going to have to deal with low class people as your neighbors. I live in Saginaw, and I haven't seen any sort of racism in our neighborhood. I would stay out of Fort Worth public school system unless you plan on sending your kids to private school. Most of the suburbs in the Northwest part of Fort Worth have pretty bad schools (i.e. Lake Worth and Azle). Benbrook would be a good area and not far from work. If you decide to live in Fort Worth city limits, there are some really nice areas in West Fort Worth and some really crappy areas...a realtor would be able to help you. The TCU area would also have some nice areas as well.
South Fort Worth is no good either. Northern suburbs like Saginaw, Keller, and Haslet would be good areas if you want to be in a suburb and all have good school districts. The Eagle Mountain area would be good...it's technically Fort Worth, but it's in the Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD, and it wouldn't be a bad drive to Carswell. Lake Country Estates is one of the neighborhoods, Eagle Ranch is another, and there are some other nice neighborhoods north of Lake Country Estates on Boat Club Road. Keller and Haslet might be kind of far. However, if you live west of the train tracks in Keller, it wouldn't affect your commute to work at all.
It's sad that racism still exists, but I don't think you will have any problems if you are in a nice neighborhood. You just don't hear educated professionals making racist comments...it's just the dumb uneducated rednecks. I think once you get here, you will actually find Fort Worth very friendly.

I assume you are talking about the lovely grain elevators in Saginaw...I know, I live here, and they annoy me too. After reading more posts, I think you should check out Eagle Mountain area of Fort Worth...it's in the same school disctrict as Saginaw, but it's farther west by Eagle Mountain Lake. The area is off of Boat Club Road. You won't see the grain elevators from there. Also check out Benbrook. It's a suburb by the southwest area of Fort Worth, and it's actually pretty for Texas. It also would be a really easy drive to Carswell. Keller is good too. I have an AA friend who relo'd his family here from Chicago about 3 yrs ago, and he really likes it.
