Smile It's Worth A Try

Jonathan,

I really believe you will like the area and you will especially love the scenery. There is no finer place to be in America than in Texas, and Granbury and Glen Rose are no exception. The big city is just an hour away and you'll have lots of small town charm wherever you decide to stay.

And I have to get you to try Hammond's Bar-B-Q in Glen Rose. If you've never had barbecue before, let this be your first place to discover real Texas food. You will be truly amazed!

Hope you'll come here.

Default Considering a move to Pecan Plantation - Advice Please!

My husband and I are considering moving to Pecan Plantation. I read that the gas plant is quite noisy, enough to disturb residents who live on the river. Can someone please let me know how much of an imposition the gas plant is. The house we are in love with is on Westover Drive.

We currently live in Los Angeles (but my husband is born, bred, raised, TEXAN and dying to return). We won't know anyone in Granbury. Are folk friendly? Is it easy to make friends? I am in my mid-30s, my husband is in his mid-40s. My stepdaughter is 10. Any inside scoop on the quality of local schools?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hawken, we don't live in Pecan, but have never heard anything bad about it. We live in Catalina Bay. We moved here in June and I'm in my early 40's. We're brand new empty nesters and I'll tell you moving here with no kids it has been more difficult to make friends. People don't go out of their way here to reach out to you. It might be easier with kids. That being sad carefully research the Granbury schools. They have a terrible reputation. My a big muckity muck in the Tx Dept of Education and has told me horror stories about Granbury. The middle school in Acton has a much better reputation, but I believe evetually it feeds into Granbury High School. Hope that helps.

Yes, I heard that too regarding Pecan Plantation. The residence of Pecan even had a strike at the Town Square regarding the gas plant. It was on the news.

We have a lot of natural gas in Granbury and the surrounding area. Some people are happy regarding it and others aren't.

Like guiltgirl said, the schools are not good. I'm not sure what the problem is but there is obviously one. Some children are trying to transfer to Tolar. I came from an area that had all top rated schools so I know it can be fixed, you just need the right leaders to fix it.

Regarding friendly, well, I would ask you...where are you from? You will be asked that like there is no tomorrow. (If your not from Texas and don't have a Texan accent.) It cracks me up. They are usually the real rural or hicky type people. They will say something like... You don't sound like your from around here or from these parts? (in a country accent). It's gets funny after a while. Oh, and most don't mean that in a good way.

It is different here that is for sure. I wouldn't call it unfriendly but I wouldn't call it a friendly place either. It's different and customer service is a big issue here. Granbury even hired a firm to come out and evaluate the city for business and the firm said that the stores (especially around the square) needs to work on customer service. I agree 100 percent with that.

Granbury is beautiful around the lake. You have the lake, the Square (my favorite restaurant is at the square (String Fellows)). There is lots of land and open spaces.

Granbury is growing fast. I think Hood County News (our local paper) said that Granbury is growing about 10 percent a year for the last 3 years.

Property values around the lake have risen tremendously and it's a great town for investment purposes.

In the Spring you will see tons of Bluebonnets and Indian Paint Brushes just blooming everywhere. I love Spring the best here.

I think in time as the town grows and grows, it will become more friendly. The city is working on a lot of projects for the future. We will have a "River Walk" and other neat stuff. A large nice hotel (Hilton) is being built on the lake right now. It will bring in a lot of business with conventions and stuff like that. The new hotel is located next to the Square on the lake.

So Granbury is coming along, I just think it needs time.
Good Luck.

Hi, I grew up in the Granbury area (DCBE) and had many many friends in PP and spent tons of time out there. I don't ever remember hearing the power plant, but maybe that is something new, this was in the late 80's.

I would agree that the schools are pretty horrible. There is a pretty large contingent of people who live in Granbury that send their kids to private schools in FW; Country Day, Trinity Valley or All Saints mostly, so there are carpool options to those schools. My middle brother and I both suffered through and graduated from GHS. I have another brother 10 years younger than me and by the time he was middle school age my parents sold the house in DCBE and got an apartment in Fort Worth so he could go to high school there.

we just went down there this weekend...Dinosaur Valley. very cool, the kids loved seeing the footprints and hiking in the water, can't wait till summer to river swim!

Granbury is very pretty and the historic downtown is VERY quaint and thriving.
Glen Rose seems like a nice small town, The HS facilities are incredible.

Overall, Very pretty area, hills, lots of big old oak trees and live oaks, limestone bluffs, the lake and the river.

Default Parks in Glen Rose & Granbury

I was wondering what some of you might be able to tell me about the parks in Glen Rose & Granbury. We have a park or 2 here in Rusk where we live now but no one is ever there so it's pointless to take my son for him to be able to play with other children. So I was wondering if there are usually children at the parks in those 2 towns quite frequently? What are the parks like and stuff? Thanks ahead of time for everyones help.

Melissa

Well, we've made up our mind and decided on Springtown, why, the 199 is a much quieter highway than the 377, the 377 goes right through Tolar. We're just waiting for closure on our new home, I'll let you all know how I'm getting on. By the way, we shall be traveling down the 51 to Granbury and on out to Tolar and Glen Rose, I want to see that windmill farm on Colony Rd. in Tolar and the other sites in Glen Rose.

Cheers Jonathan

hello to everyone. I've lived in Wisconsin and while it does have some quaint family-oriented towns, there really is no comparison to Texas. Every state has its good points and bad points. As for sex offenders, and this is my humble opinion, i would feel better being in texas than any other state for safety. first off, in texas we are free to defend ourselves, whereas in wisconsin i don't think we are..again, in my opinion. there may be a high sex offender rate...but...how many people are living in these areas? the percentage goes up when the population goes down. That being said, my husband and I live in Grand Prairie, between fort worth and dallas, and I think, maybe mistakenly, that I would feel safer in granbury, which is why we are going to be looking at property on the lake there at the end of the month. I have to believe that people take care of each other, depending on the community. granbury seems like a great place to live and aside from all of the bugs, they are all over the south. I'm more worried about the tornadoes...speaking of which, is there a shelter in granbury? and yes, I am paranoid, but in texas so doesn't matter. there's tornado potential no matter what. I AM used to basement and nobody seems to have one here. I've been in grand prairie for 3 months now and growing to love texas. does anybody know anything about granbury? churches, shopping, etc...
