Unhappy Moving from Tulsa to Fort Worth

I received a job offer and will be moving to Forth Worth soon. The taxes seem much higher in Fort Worth. Is there any other cities close to Forth Worth where the taxes are not so high. My house in Tulsa was 150,000, but my taxes are only 1500. Also my husband is in the construction or carpentry business how is this business.

I would appreciate some help in locating the correct house in a good neighborhood with not so high property taxes.

Kat

The property taxes are probably higher than you're used to because Texas uses that to compensate for no income tax. OK has a state income tax if I remember correctly.

In order to get the whole picture, run a cost-of-living comparison. I can't vouch for this site's data but they say the cost-of-living is essentially the same between Tulsa and Fort Worth.

There are some suburbs of Ft. Worth that have lower property taxes than others. I do not know off hand but will find out tomorrow. Most around here are about 2.5-3%

get a realtor would be my first response
construction is iffy--tract builders have pulled back--some have gone bankrupt and ceased building, while there are commercial builders and remodelers that are doing well--partly it depends on the area and price range the work is done in...
check TWC online site for jobs in his field

google for list of taxes per the different suburban areas--you can check Tarrant Appraisal District for info on tax rates in Tarrant county
in general unincorporated areas (county only) will have lower taxes than city areas but you also have reduced services since you don't have city police/fire/emt/--or maybe water/garbage services either--but private contractors or well/septic systems...
this area is large---so much depends on where you work as to where most people choose to live
price point is also important and so is the ISD whether you have kids or not, schools are important for resale, appreciation, liveability...

Dear KSIkorski-
I looked at different cities north of Ft. Worth and found these results for property taxes:
(these are not all, but some of the more popular ones)
Roanoke- 1.95%
Argyle- 2.12%
Keller- 2.48%
Saginaw- 2.48%
I think the school districts that feed into Northwest ISD..get a little break from the Racetrack...
Let's say your home is valued at $150,000.00 at 1.95% (Roanoke) would be about $243.00 a month in property taxes vs. for example (Saginaw) at $150,000 at 2.48%..$310.00 a month...so living in Roanoke would save you about $67 dollars a month on your payment. Pardon me for being so elementary, I used to be a teacher.. Hope that helps...
Blessings, Amy

We moved to the North Ft. Worth/Keller area from Jenks about 6 months ago. The property taxes are definitely a shock from OK, but the no income tax is nice. The other thing to prepare your wallet for is the wind/hail deductible in TX that you are required to have on a house you own. It's 1-2% of the homes value. We are getting ready to pay the deductible thanks to the golf ball to baseball size hail that bombarded our house last week.

You definitely need to take in consideration where you are going to live based on commute. Use mapquest/google to watch traffic patterns. You can't hop in the car and be some place in 15 minutes like you can in Tulsa.
