Any walkable communities in midcities?
I'm relocating to DFW in the Spring. Have been spoiled by where I live now... can park my car in the evening and walk to restaurants, parks, etc. It's Decatur, GA - part of metro Atlanta, but its own city - town square with very well planned community that promotes pedestrian traffic. Hate to leave it, but good job opportunity. I've only had one weekend so far to look around DFW and see that it's a car-lover's paradise. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't want to have to get in the car to do every single thing. My new office is just south of the airport, so I'll be commuting to the middle of the midcities. I like the feel of the Ft. Worth side of the metroplex, but downtown Ft. Worth seems a tough commute. Historic Grapevine looked interesting - smaller version of what I'm used to - anyone have other ideas about communities to consider?

Look in North Richland Hills at the Hometown development. Hometown North Richland Hills HOA - Welcome to the HomeTownNRH HOA Community Web Site There are both homes and loft-style apartments. The city library, several restaurants, NRH20 water park, NyTex Sport Center, and a large shopping center are all within walking range.

ok, don't know your budget but the Town Square in Southlake is awesome for walkability. Southlake Town Square
There are brownstones in there, the first phase is sold out but there's phase 2 now and the smallest unit is 2500SF. Very luxurious.

there are some sidewalks around the Southlake Town Square but don't think many people actually use them to walk from their suburban homes to the stores/restaurants--but most anything around there is going to be 400+ --except for the townhomes they are large, older SFH developments
NRHills--there is strip shopping mall next to those apartments--Kroger is there and Kohl's at the far, far end with some restaurants (Chaps, Chipolte, Red Hot and Blue, MacAlister's scattered around, some type of Gengis Grill) and a few shops like a place to get your hair cut--my husband uses it--
but it is a very unappealing place for "strolling"--it is a strip mall with no pretense about pretty-ing it up for pedestrian traffic
I don't know if there is a sidewalk all the way down 26 to the H2O park or if there is path from the shopping center away from 26 but there is large parking area that must be crossed and some constrction is going on there now...
frankly--I live in Mid Cities and there are few areas that are walkable except for short specific trips--and it all depends on where you live
in Colleyville (no apts there) the mall with Market Street and Gloria's fronts on 26 and backs up to where the new post office is--the neighborhood just south of there would be decent for walking to shops in that strip mall but lots are small--the Colleyville Town Center across the street houses the library so you could cross 26 there and live on other side

there is no grocery store in downtown Grapevine
closest one might be Tom Thumb that is close to where 1709 crosses 114 but I am not sure
of course the Target that fronts 114 sells groceries

Target on 114 has limited groceries but no fresh produce or meat.
Tom Thumb has one store on Northwest Highway and another down on Wm. D. Tate at Hall-Johnson.
Wal-Mart on 26 is the closest grocery store to downtown Grapevine.
You will need a car in Grapevine. We have no public transporation here. I've lived here almost 8 years now and I'm very satisfied.
