I recently got a job offer in Taneytown and am looking at moving from Michigan to Frederick. I'm in my mid twenties and will be moving with my girlfriend and our dog.

What do you think of Frederick for a young couple with no kids? We have a rent budget of about $1000 a month and would rather live close to downtown. Any good neighborhoods or apartment complexes?

Or should we live somewhere else withing driving distance of Taneytown?

Thanks

Downtown Frederick would be great for a young couple and their dog (it's fairly dog friendly, with several parks nearby) but not sure what you could find for $1,000 a month. Check Craigslist and the Frederick News Post classifieds to see if there's anything in the historic district for that price. There are some nice, newer apartment complexes on the outskirts of town, but there are also some others areas I wouldn't recommend so check carefully.

Another option is perhaps consider Westminster? I went to college there in the 90's. It's closer to Taneytown and rent may be cheaper, although it's a smaller town than Frederick and the downtown isn't quite as charming.

When renting downtown Frederick you need to consider parking. Downtown apartments do not have parking only street and then you will need to park off street on garbage collection nights.

Downtown is great for anyone young that enjoys going out because there are a lot of pubs to go to in the evening.

Downtown Frederick has a lot of historic apartments that are inexpensive but parking is sometimes an issue. There are nice apartment complexes around Spring Ridge and Ballenger Creek as well. Even towards the Lake Linganore area, you can rent a condo or townhouse pretty cheap, nice walking areas for animals and it's only 10 minutes from downtown Frederick. Westminster is also a nice college town with inexpensive rental properties, although it's not as "happening" with the bar/pub/restaurant scene as Frederick. Try to avoid Discovery in Walkersville and apartments on route 40 if possible, they have pretty high crime rates compared to the rest of the area.

Also look at Dearbought, it's a nice neighborhood very close to downtown and right on route 26 which connects you to 194 right to Taneytown. There are several restaurants and grocery stores right in the neighborhood and it's overall safe and convenient.
