Default Driving on Route 70

I already had another thread for finding places to live but this one is a simple question. Does Interstate 70 that runs through Frederick have horrible traffic? Right now I sit on traffic on 100 and I'm wondering if it's just as bad or better or worse. :-/

Thanks!

Hard to say. The construction zone where it narrows to two lanes is always a problem. That construction has been going on for years and has several yet to go. Rush hours and Friday afternoon (or any day before a holiday) is always rough. except for that 10 mile stretch I don't think the westbound (afternoon homebound) trip is that bad. Since I commute primarily on 270 I have less of a feel for the morning eastbound commute. I think it is usually pretty good down at least to US 29 and not real bad till it approaches the Patapsco River (The Baltimore/Howard County Line) but that is on occasional rush hour trips. But it is generally easier than I-270. Where are you heading to?

Getting on it from 29 looks like misery; I drive past that every day. It is clearly heavily traveled westbound from 29 in the evening.

Yea 29 connects in another 2 lane section. They even have two on ramps from Northbound 29! Does it get better when it widens to 3 lanes where Westbound 40 joins?

Frederick has been a bottleneck on I-70 for years. Once it is fully 3 lanes through town, some of the congestion will be relieved.

Sadly, the traffic will almost certainly still bottleneck once the road starts to climb Braddock Mountain. Most folks down that way don't know how to drive on mountains. Right lane for trucks, Left lane for passing, middle lane for everyone else. Also, it helps to actually hit the hammer a little before you start to climb, if I had a dollar for every car I was behind that slowed from 70 down to 50 because they bog down on the incline, I would be a millionaire.

Race you to the top of the hill.

That intersection/merge of 270/70 westbound is a cluster especially Friday afternoon. I've been backed up 10 or 15 miles there (past the Korean War monument) more than once.

I was going up Braddock a number of years ago and the person in front of me just stopped in the middle of the road. Good thing I still have a few of my aviator reflexes.

No kidding. I avoided I-70 from Hagerstown to Frederick entirely on busy weekends when I lived down there. I would take Rt. 40. Luckily, we lived close enough to go from suburban roads right to 40 without hitting any main arteries.

Sorry for the late response. I will be commuting from somewhere around Camp David all the way down to Elkridge for my job. Luckily I was able to talk my job into letting me work from home 2 days a week one week and then 3 days a week the next(alternating). I know I will hit traffic where 70 hits 29. Can anyone recommend the best travel days? I was thinking commuting Monday and Wednesday on the 2 days I have to drive to work and on the 3 days I have to drive I was going to do Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thanks for the responses thus far!

Camp David is well North of Frederick. Besides traffic you will have traffic on US-15 that is often bad and then another 10 miles or so to Thurmont and if you are ON Camp David up the mountain! ( I just made the connection to your post about renting in Northern Frederick county.

You want to stay away from Friday commutes!!! There is always bad traffic on Fridays especially when there is a three day weekend. Are your start and stop times fixed or can you flex?

Just to piggy back on this. Friday is especially bad because you have folks commuting to and from work + people getting out of town for the weekend.
