Hi--My husband and I are thinking of relocating to Frederick (we have family and work roots in the area) and have spotted a house near Walter Martz and Yellow Springs Road that we love. The house has a well/septic and after doing a bit of research on water quality in the area I came across information on the groundwater contamination from Ft. Detrick. It looks like the closest house with a contaminated well is 2 miles away--does anyone know if the contamination has affected other wells in the area where we are looking? Will any whole house filtration system eliminate the types of carcinogens I'm reading about? I have to admit that we're a little freaked out since we're moving from a community with a Superfund site that has permanently polluted the Shenandoah River. Any other information on this part of Frederick is also appreciated.

Hi --- I'd suggest you contact the Frederick County Health Department. I don't know a lot about it, but there have been questions about contamination from Ft. Detrick's "Area B" for years (regarding both water quality and "vapors"). There's a group that pushed the county to investigate what they alleged was a cancer cluster around Area B - I believe the Frederick County Health Department took the lead on investigating it and did not find a correlation. They DID, however, recently connect a group of homes on Kemp Lane to city water; prior to that the Fort was supplying bottled water to them. Those must be the wells you're speaking of.

I think the water table in the area you're considering is upstream, so to speak, of Area B...a good thing.

By the way, they're just starting a huge new housing development on Yellow Springs Road that you will pass on your way to the Walter Martz intersection. The City of Frederick has annexed a lot of land in the area - you might want to check with them to see what's slated for development around the home you're considering.

Frederick is a wonderful place to live. Good Luck!
