And oh yes. In the rare event I do get asked to pay for shipping (I still believe that in light of the depressionary economy we are in, that should be a courtesy the seller picks up to secrure the order), I *only* pay actual. If I get charged $5 to ship something, it had better cost just that....$5 or less. Not one penny more. A cent over actual and I will be filing fraud and misrepresentation charges. Fair is fair.
Are you serious? Don't you understand that, as you put it, "in light of the depressionary [sic] economy we are in" everyday people that sell on eBay (like me) need to make profit...and isn't that kind of the point of selling on eBay in the first place?!
There's a reason that shipping is referred to as "shipping and handling" because it allows a seller to charge more than just what it EXACTLY costs for shipping as a handling charge. Now, do some sellers charge ridiculous fees for S&H--sure. Don't buy from them! Plus--what's fraudulent??! The buyer is telling you beforehand how much he/she is charging for S&H! You'd have no case whatsoever with eBay.
But take me, for example...the bulk of what I sell is consignment clothing. It costs me, typically, around $2-4 to send each item. I ship in Tyvek envelopes...which cost me 50 cents apiece. Therefore, for an item that will cost me about $2.09 to ship, I'll charge $2.95 for shipping. Factoring in the tape I have to BUY and the ink I have to BUY to print out the label (ever thought of that?!), I'm making nothing off shipping. Yet, if you were to weigh the item I shipped you, and see it cost me $2.09...would you get pissed that I charged 84 cents more?
And, just so you know, eBay *typically* takes 9% of the final price for auction style, and 12% for fixed price... PayPal takes another 30 cents plus 2.9% of the transaction fee... plus if you have any costs incurred at insertion of the item. This ALL cuts into the profit.
And, for sellers that offer free shipping...don't you get that they're just factoring in that cost to the list price?
No offense, but please...for the sake of sellers like me that are honest and fair, but still trying to make some extra $$...stay away from eBay. It sounds as if you don't understand basic economics besides how the website works...
There are about 1300 listings for cassette decks (home, auto, vintage). 650 of those listings are available, or starting bid, under $10.00. If you just wanted one for decorative purposes, why didn't you pick one of those?
Because that would mean paying full asking price, which I NEVER pay.
Oh, I see. You just want to play control games, see if you can get a seller to take a loss on their listing. Sorry - I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to buy a cassette deck for a low price.
Carry on. Have fun.
I was a full time seller at the end of college in the "wild west" days of ebay of 1998 and 1999 and did it part time for years afterword, my final year being my most profitable.
Everyone once in a while I'd have a muppet send a message lowballing me on something I had posted. At first I tried to converse with these people, but it was like talking to an obnoxious brick wall, so later I just blocked them and ignored it. There is no point.
Basically the way I set my auctions up was for a starting bid of twice the wholesale price. If I got more, then great, if not I at least met a basic level of profit. Also these were often items that were in the $10-$20 price range so I wasn't going to be buying a Ferrari with my earnings.
Sure sometimes I would have to relist and as I recall ebay would give you a freebie on the first relist.
But at the end of the day, with the thousands of items I sold, 99.5% plus ended up out the door. I also never lost money either.
The only time I would not care about the price is if I was selling personal goods that I just wanted to go to a good home rather than the dump. I sold a lot of car magazines that way, really only interested in clearing costs, but I actually made some significant profits.
On shipping, I always made it clear that I included packaging costs and that was just part of the deal. Again I'd have some lowballing dingleberries try to hit me up for free shipping, but sorry it doesn't work that way. Ignore. Some of the items I sold such as posters that needed sturdy shipping tubes and if you wanted a poster from me, you were buying the tube to ship it in as well.
It's one thing to bargain for a deal, another just be obnoxious and stupid about it. As a seller I found those people were just not worth a minute dealing with.
I also had a few people try to run scams on me as well. I remember one bozo that insisted the model I sent was smashed into pieces and that it was not the mail that did it, but me. Yeah I had purposefully smashed the model and sent it to him. He insisted that I refund the whole price. I said send it back and I will refund the purchase price. He said no he wanted the money and to keep the model. I said well send me a digital photo of this smashed up model and guess what, he sent me a photo of the wholly intact model. Uh? I told him where he could stick the model.
Well Des old boy, (may I call you Des)? I am afraid, my friend, that all the trinkets on eBay will not cure what really ails you as there are no mental health professionals proffering their wares on ebay. But all is not lost!
Next time you pick up your Government Cheese at the welfare office, just inquire about the availability of free psychiatric services! Ha! Government Head Cheese!
Seriously, Having a fat, ugly, blob of a momwife is NOT the end of the world. A wily therapist could get your ugly mess of a life sorted out in no time. Then Bob's your Uncle, your effeminate, delusional postings are a thing of the past! OUT-truculent school girl, IN-Mr. Cool! Out of the monitor lit internet basement and into the sunshine of real life! Yes imagine, a REAL LIFE!!!!! Earning a fair wage for a good days work. Paying a fair price for quality goods. Treating those you deal with fairly and with respect, and actually being respected yourself! It IS possible! You CAN do it!!!!
Incredible I’ve finally found a buyer eBay wouldn’t want! Ebay makes money on sellers who make a profit. Even Joe Blow cleaning out his neighbor’s garage wouldn’t spend time listing items if he looses money, and with free shipping he would loose money. I sell antiques & collectables on eBay I've been in business since 1999. If I can’t make a profit then I don’t list it and I’m willing to hold on to it until the price goes back up, after all it doesn’t cost me anything to keep it. Any listing I place with “Make Offer” I set an auto reject price so I don’t waist time on people like OP. It would be nice if he would give us his ID so we could block him but then again I guess I'm out of his price range LOL
Really wish you'd post your eBay ID so we could save you and ourselves aggravation and just block you now.
I know! I was going to say the same thing!
