Prices sure have gone up when it comes to sending a package. I sent a shoe box size apparel weighing less than 2 lbs to be shipped internationally and the cheapest was $19.58 first class that the postal worker told me. I actually wanted the cheapest, but they didn't have anything less than first class. This was done about 10 days ago and i just found out that it has left the U.S today, so it looks like it will take another 7-10 days to arrive in Asia. The postal worker had told me it would take around 10-11 days to arrive at the destination...go figure.
Is Fedex or any other carrier cheaper than the U.S postal service when it comes to sending packages? Thanks.
For things over five pounds, the others are cheaper, but for smaller things, the Post Office is usually pretty good.
(As this is the Frugal Living forum, here's a cheapskate tactic for mailing: Get a whole load of Forever stamps, and then when postage goes up, just use those stamps you bought at a lower rate on your package; it'll be like the postage rate not going up at all.)
There are specialist shipping firms that work certain regions or countries, for example the firm "Meest" ships parcels to Ukraine at good prices. Keep in mind too that the USPS has flat-rate boxes that ship for a fairly reasonable price based on the volume of the box, regardless of weight (maybe the weight thing is subect to a limit, but if so it's quite high).

Unless the rules have changed, you can't send international mail with forever stamps. International mail has to be posted with an postage amount printed, and forever stamps have no printed denomination.

It would probably work for domestic parcels, then.
Flat Rate goes up to 70 pounds. Go ahead and stick 70 pounds of lead in that box, it ships.
By bilateral agreement, there may or may not be any form of surface postal service to any given country. You were apparently shipping to a country that had no agreement with the USA for the cheaper surface post, so everything goes by air.

There is now a global forever stamp for international airmail letters.

Put one plain postage stamp on it.
Place the destination you want the package to go to in the top left hand corner.
Place your address in the middle.
Post office sees one stamp and initiates RETURN TO SENDER (the address in the top left corner - where you actually want the package to be delivered)
