Many parents are upset about having to send cards to school for V Day for their kids to pass out and claim it is forcing them to spend money.

Those little boxes of cards cost as low as, one dollar for 25 cards - even a lot of the cards with treats included are super cheap.

If one is broke, they could make cards out of paper at home and send them to school. Get out some paper, scissors and pen.

To me this holiday is nothing like Christmas with it's emphasis on material things and the latest toys and gadgets.

It's a total BS holiday. Money grab. As they all are. They designate a day for you to express your love for someone? How about deciding as an individual when to do that? It's just herding sheep so they can take as much of their money as possible.

I'm bitter.

Everything is about making $$$. Especially in the US.
Those are holidays for ... merchants.

According to new data from Bankrate, the average cost of Valentine's Day can end up totaling $512.02, once the roses, chocolates, dinners, jewelry, and bottles of champagne are added up.
This is How Much Valentine

That is sad that we have become so brainwashed that we have to "prove" our love to someone on a made up holiday.

To the OP. I think the teachers feel they are doing a "sweet" thing by having kids hand out cards. Sadly this falls into our materialism and it doesn't get better as we get older.

I completely agree, but it has been done for decades; we gave valentines to our friends at school 70 years ago. As for a special dinner for your sweetheart with a bottle of wine, candy etc. that is just a money maker for the merchants. We did go out for dinner one year, the prices were jacked up, the service awful and the food wasn't even good. That was the last time we did anything more than say " I love you sweetheart" Well hubby did used to get the kids and me Sees candy. I am glad our kids are grown. Oh, one more thing, even worse than the card exchange at school is the policy "you have to give a card to each child" What is so special about that? Now, I will add; I don't think it is anything to get too upset about: the cost of the cards are really not that much.

I'm bitter.
Bitter perhaps, but correct.

Nobody is forced to hand out cards at school. Children can opt out of it if they want to. I do not see a problem.

That is a personal choice to spend that much money, though. I don't know many people who spend all that.
