While I too like the savings at "dollar" stores one has to be careful to always check where the product is made. Many are U.S. made for export that have unsafe non-U.S. market ingredients in them. These products then get re-imported back into the U.S. to sell for cheap in "dollar" stores.

These re-imports are mostly soaps and the like with a some chinese made food stuffs (YUCK! ) thrown in for good measure.

So when shopping these "dollar" stores always be mindful that there is a reason the stuff is cheaper than the store down the block. The labels on the stuff may look the same but the product inside IS different than U.S. marketed products.

I won't buy groceries at the dollar store unless it's made here in the U.S.. Look at the labels - most of the food is from China, etc.

This must be what my son was trying to tell me. He said he didn't know about their food and ingredients. He wants me to join Sam's Club.

does anyone know if Sam's is a good deal?

If you like brand name products and use large amounts, Sam's is a good deal. If you're happier using store brands and saving money that way, then Sam's is probably not your thing.

I buy peanut butter, tuna(the huge cans), and pork shoulder there. I try to spread out my trips because some other things always jump into my cart.

thanks. No, I'm a tightwad, so I would be happier using store brands and saving money.

Well, I don't know if it's worth it to join for $40.00 for a few things. I heard the gas is cheap, is it worth it?

I got gas there yesterday. It was $3.61 compared to $3.69 almost everywhere else in town. My car takes 9 gallons, so if I saved 8 cents a gallon, that's 72 cents. I get gas once a week. If I saved 72 cents each time, that would be $37.44 a year.

yellowsnow is right about other things jumping into the cart while you're there...packs of muffins and pretty plants seem to be my weakness there

I did buy my computer there and it was a good deal. They're also the only place in town that carries liquid Ariel laundry detergent. The only reason I ended up with a card though is that my MIL got it through her work for $10 and gave us the 2nd card.

Sams and Costco are a good deal if you have a family and you use what you buy. I like to buy my veggies for salads from there. If you can share the membership with someone it's a great deal, I share mine with my neighbor. Between toilet paper, gas and salads.. already the membership is covered. They have good deals on lots of things if you need it, but going their requires self control. Never go there when you are hungry, have lunch or dinner first before you go.

if you use a lot of otc medicine and vitamins, the savings buying kirkland brand are crazy. its so much cheaper and works just as good. right now i have kirkland nasal spray, kirkland's acid reducer (pepcid ac), kirkland sleeping pills, kirkland's ibuprofen, kirkland's multivitamin, kirklands vitamin c, kirklands vitamin d3. the savings over name brand is ridiculous! we are talking 1/10 the price sometimes of what you may pay at a pharmacy at a decent price.

i get the bulk of my stuff from costco and i keep to my list of things. there is very little waste in my house. its awesome. my mom added me to her membership so i dont even pay that.

The thing is that medications, OTC vitamins and this kind of stuff do not have to list a country of origin. If is so "ridiculous" cheap - is made in China or around.
