Expired food, vitamins, do you still eat them or do you toss them out? (store, buying)

I have a big bottle of multivitamin that is expired according to the date stamp. One part of my brain says, toss it, another part says, are you crazy? what would you do? do you stick with that expiration date on food or meds? I am good at using food before the expired date is due, but this bottle is my dilemma
On this type of product it is unlikely that using it will do you any harm, it probably just won't be as effective. I'd go ahead and use it, but if you find that it's not doing for you what it has done in the past you might increase the dosage.
Pills are good far beyond the expiration date.
Oil based ointments too. Sugar or alcohol based syrups also.
I would be more careful with eye drops, but they are good few months beyond the date.
Expiration dates have to be conservative because of the range of storage conditions.
Vitamins kept in a refrigerator will stay potent longer than those left in your car. The same goes for foods. Some nameless executive responding to a governmental mandate and slapping a date on a container is not a rational basis for personal inventory decisions.
ill try any food before throwing it out for that being past expiration date.
today i threw out 2 bottles of marie's yogurt thousand island dressing. i only got them because with coupons i was able to get them free. they expired so fast (i think less than 2 weeks from purchase) and its not a product i use regularly. they are about 2 months past expiration so i just tossed them. if i paid for them id have tried them first.
Thanks everyone for the reply. I have been taking the vitamins and for sure I don't toss any food till it starts to look or smell funny. But I learned not to keep too much around even in the freezer, buying a lot of stuff just because they are cheap isn't good if I toss half of them.
Multivitamins are pretty cheap, and if they've been stored at room temperature, chances are they are not very effective anymore. Certainly no harm in using them, but just buy new ones and be more sure that you are getting the benefits. There are dozens of different chemical combinations in multivitamins, and some likely have an unstable half life.

Yeah, I wonder about that myself. I should be running like a horse with bones from steel if the ones I am taking are doing what they should be .
Multivitamins are probably not useful at all to people who are fairly conscientious about their diet, but if you get mostly junk food and processed convenience foods, chances are you are not getting your minimum requirement of many vitamins and minerals.
