I was working out of town last week and happened into a restaurant. It was a place specializing in Greek food. It was not a fancy place and it looked like a diner.

Anyway, I ordered the crab cakes off the appetizer section of the menu. They cost $7.95. The waitress seemed a bit taken back I had just ordered that and asked if that was all I wanted as I only got two of them with my order. I said that was fine.

They arrived and were great. I was full after eating both (barely able to finish them) and went to pay. I had gotten tea to drink. I paid at the register and girl told me my total was in the $10 range and then corrected her self and said it would be $12. I was on an expense account so it didn't matter that much. But I looked at my bill and noticed they had added an extra $1.99 since all i had gotten was an appetizer.

Looking back, I wish I had said something. There was nothing mentioned on the menu saying you'd be charged extra if all you wanted to eat was an appetizer. I've ordered appetizers for meals before and never been charged like this before. If I'd been paying out of my own pocket, I'd definitely have complained. While I'm unlikely to be in that area again, I'll be certain not to go there if I am.

Has anyone else ever seen this? I didn't know where to post this, but it seems like the cheapskate forum would be a good place.

Never seen it. However, I would be as upset as you. If it were out of my pocket, I would have refused to pay the $1.99.

There is one restaurant in town that charges if you want to share your meal with someone else using an extra plate. We don't go there.

DH and I order just apps all the time.
We have never been hit with a surcharge for doing so.

That's pretty standard procedure. But a charge for ordering only an appetizer I've never seen. Sure hope it doesn't catch on.

I get why a waiter/waitress can get a little pushy about someone just ordering an appetizer. They are probably used to someone ordering an entree plus a beverage so they expect to earn ~$2 per person at the table. But, when you only order an appetizer, maybe they think they are getting shafted. I usually tip the wait staff as if I was eating a "normal" lunch/dinner regardless of what I order.

Unfortunately, since you can't really tip beforehand, sometimes the wait staff will act the way they do.

Since you didn't question the bill and get any answers, there is no way we can guess why your bill did not match your expectations.

Never seen it, and im sort of surprised. Appetizers are never even a good deal to begin with. They are usually less food for the money, so I would assume more profit (although a marginal amount).

Never experienced that. I defiinitely would have said something (assuming I noticed it in the first place).
