Dr. Phil had this guy on his show Friday. his wife said he was the cheapest man in the world. Here were some things she said he does.
He pulls grapes off the stem and puts them in a bag before buying them so he isn't paying for the stem. Dr. Phil got a grape stem and weighed it and said based on the average cost of grapes, the stem cost 11 cents.
He takes ketchup packets from fast food places and squeezes them into a ketchup bottle so he doesn't have to buy ketchup. He even stops into places and gets packets without buying any food.
He once gave his wife flowers. she thought that was nice, until she saw a sympathy card inside and he admitted he got them from a trash dumpster behind a funeral home.
When they eat out, he asks other diners if he can have food they aren't eating to take home with him. He said about 90% of people do give him their food.
Eh. That's not that cheap. I've heard of people doing the thing with the ketchup packets. For getting flowers for his wife, that's cheap, but I don't think that's really unheard of. Now, if there was the scent of garbage mixed in with the flowers, that would be cheap.
I've got to admit, though, I didn't think of taking the stem off grapes as a way of saving money. I mean, you get a few bags of grapes, and it can add up to maybe 50 cents or so. Still, I'd just stick with looking for sales on grapes.
I think it's ok, if you have ketchup or taco sauce packages left over, to take them home with you. That is assuming, of course, that you're not purposely grabbing handfuls just so that you end up with a bunch left over; but if you honestly just ended up with a couple too many, I see no problem with it.
If you go into a fast food place and take the packages of ketchup or what have you without even buying anything, well, in my book, that's stealing.
Me? I don't want to mess with them. If I end up with any left over, I will, after cleaning up my stuff and disposing of it, leave them on the table for the next person or for whoever is wiping the tables to decide what to do with them.
Kind of interesting, though, that the grape stems add an extra 11 cents to your grapes. I have actually wondered about that myself.
Hey once we were eating at a tacobell and a man came in and took one of the chairs!! Gotta wonder if that guy that stole that has a bunch of tacobell chairs at his dining room table at home? weird...

I've heard it all now!
I think being so..so.. cheap is like a mental illness. There are varying degrees of frugalness but pulling the stem off the grapes is a little "too much" along with discarded funeral flowers...creepy!
