We still have two huge 32 and 27 inch million pound nonflat tvs. I don't know another word for nonflat. My husband is chomping at the bit to replace them. But I refuse to until they break. They are Sonys and over 10 years old so it may still be a while!

The decision is totally based on your values. The worst of the new tech flatscreens will have a comparable, if not better, picture than the oldschool tube. High tech, non-pixelated still rule the editing world but their day has come. Ultimately though one can replace older technologies with new ones on the cheap if one isn't insistent on purchasing first generation models. Plasma is a great way to go and easy on the wallet...IMHO, YMMV...
We still have the first color tv we bought (after our next door neighbors broke in and stole our 19 in B/W Zenith!) paid $119.00 for it.

That was when we got married. We used to go "dump hunting" for stuff. Crazy the things people throw away!
Hubby got a microwave that only needed a fuse replaced! Took that to work.
Rosingnoll? Skis, snowblowers, lawn mowers just needing spark plug replacements thrown away!
Today the "dump" is getting shabby people are finally hanging on to things longer and fixing them then just throwing them away.
One of the best finds was the old style dining tables you see from the 50s & 60s Gray marble top, 4 chairs and the middle extender. Hubby reupolstered the seats and it was 100% new looking.
I still have my High chair which I think was a hand me down.
that is great. I miss dial up . Flat panel CRTs look great too. I just gave a 27" away . I think the good thing about LCDs is for space and energy savings. HD picture going into HDMI does look sharp though.

It's Flat Screen CRT.
Flat Panels are LCDs, Plasmas, etc. The OP indicated Flat Screen, so I assume he's talking about CRTs.
No digital tv's here, just 3 ordinary big clunky boxes - about 27 inches, including one where the on-off button is broken. We can only turn it on and off with the remote. We plan to replace them as they stop working, no hurry. No X-boxes or WII in this house either.
I've still got the 27" JVC hulk that I broke down and bought in Feb. 1989 about 3 weeks after I broke my arm and was off work (blue collar laborer). I'd done without any TV for about six years but one can only spend so many hours a day reading and I'd gone through over 30 books in those 3 weeks.
After moving here it took me 4-1/2 years before I got around to getting cable - just did Netflix for those years.
While I'd like a new one I just can't seem to spend the money on that when there are so many other things that get a higher priority. About half the time it's on it's tuned to the Galaxy Classical Music station anyway so there really is no rush as far as I'm concerned so I'll probably wait until this one dies.
We have a 20 inch RCA thats 20 years old and still works. Likewise two RCAs( 26 and 27 inch) that are going on 10 years old. Both work fine and I can't see getting rid of a perfectly working TV( or anything for that matter) just to get something new and "better". When one does go we'll get a 31 inch flat screen and I'll be happy.
We do have a flat screen 19 inch TV thats a few years old that is in the kitchen on the counter. I do like that one. And we got some new flat 20 inch computer monitors when the old dinosaurs we were using finally started to die.
