We get most of our stuff at the local produce store (which also has dairy and some beans/grains) and at the farmer's market; the produce store also has a bargain rack (bought 11 pounds of cucumbers for 99 cents, for example -- had to pickle them that day, but it was worth it!). That provides the bulk of our food, but I buy bulk beans and rice at Smart and Final, stock up on pasta or other cupboard items when it goes on sale at Safeway (and also get other non-perishables there when it goes on sale), and get most basics (like olive oil and parmesan) and prepared produce (baby carrots, etc.) from Trader Joe's. Safeway and Nob Hill (Raley's) tends to be more expensive, but they have some decent deals if you watch the sales and use coupons. I keep an eye on sales and promotions at Walgreen's and CVS, too.
Any store that has not been overran buy Yuppies. You see, when these t**ds invade a normal store, well the management starts stocking overpriced junk and less of the working-class barfbag-type food that is cheap.
1) 99centsOnlyStore. All my cleaning, paper products, pasta, rice, coldcuts, condiments, salad fixings. You never know what you will find. Last week I got Wolfgang Puck pasta sauce for $1. And you can't beat canned crab for a buck.
2) Usually El Super. The Hispanic groceries have great deals. Last week, chicken legs .67c/lb. Tomatoes 3lbs/$1. Onions 7lbs/$1.
3) The regular grocery store for everything left on my list. Usually Smiths/Krogers. Occasionally Walmart.
Safeway, Raleys, TJ's and a local independent place near my house that has a great meat counter. We are getting a Walmart grocery store soon (just groceries, not a superstore) so I'll check that out too.
I shop mostly at Giant. Their prices are reasonable and the food quality is decent. Plus, they give discounts on gas. When I want to save some extra money, I shop at Walmart. Occasionally, I go to Whole Foods, but it is out of the way and pricey.
I shop at a local chain called Market Basket--cheap and non pretentious but they don't have everything.
I love Market Basket and when I visit my folks on Cape Cod I always pick up a bunch of stuff. The first time I went into a Market Basket (about 6 months ago) I was with my best friend from NYC. We must have looked like hillbillies or something because we were in awe of the place. Everything is SO cheap we were pointing at stuff, running up to stuff, and just buying everything in sight. Acting like we had never been in a grocery store before. It was too funny. We're a little more calm now that we've been a few times, but that chain is seriously cheap, especially when something is on sale.
