Where do you all buy these? I am wondering if there are greater savings to be had by buying things like toiletries, paper towels, household cleaner, batteries, and random things like that online instead of at a big box store? Or does it really depend on the item?
I've often found that the dollar stores offer the best prices on those types of items, even better than the big box places. The only way to know for sure in your particular area would be to do a comparison, pick a few items and note the per unit prices keeping in mind that just because it's sold in bulk doesn't necessarily mean it's cheaper. In my area at least I generally pick up those items at Dollar Tree and find better per unit prices than anywhere else.
I've actually scored the best deals on these with sales at office places like Staples, etc.
I think the best one i got was Office Depot or Staples, with a price match to another store, and then bought one of those coupons online for $1, and ended up getting like 100 rolls of paper towels for $20 or something

I second the dollar store.
Big Lots also has some good deals on cleaning supplies.
I usually get mine at CVS. They have pretty good sales and I usually combine that with a coupon...since toiletries and stuff lasts, I just stock up when it's on sale. I check my CVS ExtraCare customer card for extra coupons each time I go in to the store and sometimes I can save even more. I also earn ExtraBucks that I can use at a later time towards my purchases. And I registered my ExtraCare card online so I get 20% off offers sometimes.
Menards also has some killer sales on household products, I sometimes watch for those and stock up. Even at regular prices they're usually less expensive than WalMart.
I am a wee bit picky about those items and will use only the brand I prefer so I usually just pick mine up at the grocery because not only am I picky I refuse to drive around town and making numerous stops using the gasoline when I can pick up everything at the grocery.
My Mother however does make numerous stops to different places and she tends to prefer Dollar General for cleaning supplies and bathroom items.

I do this as well! I can almost always beat the dollar store prices on most items.
For toiletries, usually CVS or Target or Wal Mart. I use coupons with sales.
Cleaning items, I try to get at the dollar store.
