A Hostess factory is going out of business. So the News says.

I see a lot of jokes about twinkies. My wife says they make dingdongs and hohos as well.

I do nor recall eating a twinky since I was in highschool in the 70s.

Do their pastries really form part of the regular diet of most folks?

If places are passing laws regulating trans-fats and empty calories; then I could see where their market is likely shrinking.

Yesterday I hear a program where they were interviewing school district cafeteria managers. Talking about new laws requiring that they cook food and include so much fruit and veggies. No junk food is allowed anymore.

So it makes me wonder if maybe the Hostess executives saw the writing on the walls, that society is changing to no longer consume junk food.

Never.
But I seem to remember my brother being a die-hard fan as a kid.

A lot fewer than once did.

When I was little my grandmother would give my brother and I (if we behaved ourselves)
a pack of Twinkies and a bottle of Frosty Root Beer each as a treat **just before we left for home**.

Mom always appreciated this and so would NEVER buy them for us.
We did get "Scooter Pies" (the Yankee Moon Pie) when they came out though.

The nanny state government might be trying to force people to eat healthy by passing laws about food, but that does not mean that Americans have any more interest in eating healthy. I haven't seen any Micky D's going out of business.

I've never bought Hostess, but somebody was buying. I suspect that the big problem was that there are many companies making very similar products that are priced much cheaper. Hostess had all the big pension expenses and high wages thanks to the unions, and also robber baron CEO's who voted themselves high salaries that the didn't deserve. So hostess could not cut expenses to make a lower price point.

Americans tend to price shop and if they can get a ho-ho type cake for 1/2 the price and it tastes just as good (?), they are going to buy the cheaper product.

I hope not. That stuff is pure garbage. Okay for occasionally, but seriously, not good for the body!

For the first time in years I bought some Hostess cupcakes a while before the Hostess closing was announced.
I decided they weren't anything I'd buy again. I'd rather get some Safeway donuts or other pastries sold by
grocery stores.

I would buy the cupcakes once or twice a year. No Twinkies since I was about 45 years younger.
