That's what I do with my internet from AT&T, I have never played the "I will cancel" game. I just call and ask nicely if they have any deals going on. I have never been told no, and I am sure they would rather me ask nicely than pretend to cancel.

That's AT&T.

OP was probably talking about TWC and asking them if they have any deals doesn't work. You have to call and get grumpy with them, ask why other companies give discounts for long-term customers and TWC jacks up the bill $8 every year without any increase in internet speed. Talk long enough, and eventually they will lower your bill for a year.

Hi Hedgehog_Mom--

I have TWC and I corroborate this. They only grease the squeaky wheels. It's amazing how I've been able to hold down my internet costs over the past two years. At one point, I had 10mb internet and land line phone for $30 a month (which unfortunately has risen to $43 since then despite my bitching - it would have gone up even further if I hadn't).

Unfortunately, when you phone in a complaint about prices and you're paying less than $50, you don't have a lot of leverage.

But, the threat to switch to the competition always works wonders. They'll forward you "to the retention department" and they'll throw you a bone.

As to cable TV, I haven't had it in a year - and I'll probably never have it again. I don't watch that much TV.

So please don't laugh at me, this is kind of dumb, but if my cable/internet company is offering a great deal for "new customers only", then if I were to cancel my cable and internet then sign up again shortly thereafter, would I be a "new customer"?

What about just paying them in full then having services canceled and then started up again in the name of another adult in the house? Would that be ok or somehow against the rules or whatever?

I'm annoyed I guess, I really need to cut back on the cost of this and I really only want internet. The problem is, I signed up for some bundle in the beginning, so that if I drop the basic cable then the internet charge increases so it is a wash. When I called to drop the cable they said I'd end up paying $52 a month anyway. I am currently paying $55 for internet and basic basic (i mean BASIC, just a handful of local channels really) cable that no one ever watches. If I could take advantage of this new customer special I'd have the same internet speed for $19 a month plus tax. A big deal over time, especially since we're wanting to move in summer and will have increased housing costs. Just trying to figure out if I can make it work for me.

When trying to be more frugal, internet is the one thing I cannot do without. Cable can go, I don't care, but internet for me as a student, plus with kids who need it for school projects and research, plus as our major source of entertainment (i.e. Netflix and Amazon video) then I need it and at a decent speed.
I used Comcast for my cable TV. It was a two year contract with a new customer discount for the first year, then it resets to the standard pricing for the second year. At the end of my first year I called Comcast and told them, I don't want to continue my service if I can't keep the new customer discount and they gave me the discount. You could try calling them and say you saw the promotion for new customers and you would like to receive that price or else it's not worth it for you to continue service with them. If they are a large company, I'm confident they will give you that price.

In this day in age it is a consumer's market. If I don't like the price of your cable...good bye!

Your gonna be a jerk to me over the phone...ill call up the other 7 cable/internet providers.

People aren't making making bank at least not the average Joe....we have adapted to not being loyal brandists anymore. If Tide detergent costs too much then I will just choose another or make my own detergent if I really wanted too.

We are in control.

It's Grande, actually. I still haven't done anything about it... now it looks pretty certain that we are moving out of town in six months or so, but that's still six months I could be saving about 50% so I really should try! We haven't had TWC in years and really don't want to go back to them if we don't have to.

Tried that with DishNetwork, said they didn't care, called my bluff, and said go ahead.
I actually went up several levels in "Customer Loyalty" representitives.

I talked to Dish in the morning.
By lunchtime I had signed up with Comcast and called Dish back to cancel and you should have heard them begging me to stay.
And the best part was that it was the same guy doing the begging that had offered me nothing that morning.
