I think you are misusing the word 'frugal' A better word to describe your co-worker would be 'miserly'

You're probably right but there are some others who I work with that are definitely frugal out of fear of not having an abundance of cash stacked away in case of an emergency. I just dont see that as a way to live your life. Things do happen in life and it's nice to have the $ to be able to handle it when/if a situation arises, but I would not live my entire life prepping for that day.

So I must ask to you extremely frugal people. How can you enjoy life by pinching penny's and saving every dime just for the sake of saving? I know the saying "money doesnt buy happiness" and I agree to an extent, but life experiences do. Traveling the world to experience different cultures, scenery, and foods bring happiness in my opinion and experiences. [quote]

Am sure your friend is asking the same question but quite opposite?

Anyway, experiences means different to different people. For you, it may mean heaven and earth and for other's it's just another day in life.

In his defence - let's say you get hit by a bus tomorrow(not wishing to but just saying) and you have drain out all of your 401k, retirement and couch money and start off from scratch - what would be your experience? what will be your priority?

Now, in your defence - it all comes down to balance. if you have found a balance between saving and spending, be it so but don't use that to paint anyone else that way.

hope this helps

I'm frugal, buy on sale, used, etc, don't run the water when I brush, turn off lights, wear a sweater inside to keep heat waaaay down, etc. This has enabled us to spend on: a camper to travel with and recently a home down south. See, we're frugal on the necessities so we can have the luxuries. Hope this addresses your inquiry.

That's misery, not frugality. I am frugal and as a result, I can allow myself good things. Just like Dave said - if you live now like nobody else...

I never buy stuff I don't need unless it's dirt cheap. I save a little money, have no debt, and much enjoyment over that.

Are you kidding OP? I love my life. I enjoy getting a bargain. I enjoy not being foolish and wasting money on crap I don't need. I enjoy having money in the bank, and owing nobody. Its American people in general that are messed up. Everything is evaluated in terms of money. That's pretty sick. In fact, money problems are the cause of many family disputes, fights and divorces. IMHO, not having money problems means I can enjoy life, my family, my work etc. I don't have bills hanging over my head.

We are frugal, my wife and I don't go out much, but we do like to spend on vacation, whether that is seeing her family in Europe or cruising.

But it's pretty damn cool having $$$ in the bank. It's just sad I have to keep my mouth shut about it with most of my family they are $$$ sponges and never save.
