Canned soup is almost always overpriced. The exceptions may be those "ingredient" soups ("cream of" celery, tomato etc) often marketed as the starting point for other recipes.
Otherwise, the best way to make soup is to save your trimmings and make your own stock.
Lentil soup is what, 1.20-1.80 a can? One can buy a whole POUND of dried lentils for the same $.
My biggest WTH? Pine Nuts. $35 bucks a pound at Whole Foods the other day. No thanks. I'll find something else.
Sprouts (if you have them) is less expensive than Whole Foods.
As to soup, I only buy when on sale. Got 5 cans today for 99 cents each that would normally have been over $2 a can.
Campbells really has gone up but I never buy it so it's not one of those things I pay attention to. Soup, in general, is cheapest at Wal-mart and most expensive at the Safeway near my house. Well, what is really cheapest is when they are on sale for 99 cents anywhere.

I stocked up on the Progresso soups when they were 10/$10 a couple of weeks ago.
I just never saw that price on plain old Campbell soup before.

I'm with you. I can't ever see myself wanting Pine Nuts so much that I'd pay $35 for a pound of them.
Whole black peppercorns seemed very expensive last time I bought them. They were cheapest per pound in little cello-bags from a small processor, but came only in dainty one-ounce sizes, so I'm assuming they can be bought in bulk somewhere, at least online. Supermarkets are often unwilling to stock large-size spices, except for the high-salt-content blends.

I buy nearly all of my herbs and spices from the bulk bins. They're so much cheaper that way! The only reason I wouldn't buy from the bulik bin is if that particular herb/spice isn't stocked there. If you don't have Sprouts where you are, then check out health food stores.
