You can get a pre-paid cell from Walmart for about $12/mo if you don't use very many minutes. There aren't any texts or data on that plan however.

That's the phone I have (Tracfone); I buy a 60 minute airtime card and Tracfone gives me three months service with it, so it amounts to roughly $7/mo (including tax). One can purchase a card for a year and get even better savings. I have texting on the phone and can access the internet.

I bought a TMobile pay as you go phone at Wally world. If you purchase 1000 minutes, its $100, plus the minutes are good for a year, they don't expire. I switched all our phones in our home to this and has worked pretty well for almost a year now. My wife and I both had to add another 1000 minutes, so its cost us $500 this year, but that's less than half of what our call plan with ATT was costing us.

If I shop around (ebay, shopcelldeals) I can usually get a Tracfone 1 yr/400 min card for about $70 (Usually $100). With double minutes for life and a 250 bonus minutes code I can get 1000 minutes. I only use my flip phone cell for occasional brief calls and texts, no yakking.

If you have a wifi phone get a google voice number and GrooveIP app to make free calls while on wifi to save on minutes.

For at home you can get a $40 Obi100 device and set it up with Google Voice and a regular telephone to have a free "landline" phone.

WOW, thanks for that info! I didn't know you could get such a cheap plan that includes texting. I'm paying through the nose at Verizon for a 2 year "dumb" phone contract, but it's up at the end of the year...

If you're looking for a cell phone for 1000 minutes, you might like Virgin Mobile if they go to your area. They have payLo phones for as little as $15.99 for a phone. For $30.00 a month, you get 1500 minutes and 1500 messages (payLo Pay As You Go Talk & Text Plans | Virgin Mobile).

What I did was purchase a smart phone from Virgin Mobile and pay $35.00 a month for unlimited texting, data, and 350 minutes and if I'm talking to someone I know, I'll call them from Skype. They do throttle data, but it's not slow at all.

I think Virgin Mobile also has the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and maybe the newer iPhone. The cost will definitely be higher up front since you're not signing a contract. I would rather do that anyway. I had an iPhone through Verizon and paid $200.00 for the phone and then another $90.00 a month, so you end up saving a lot more money by going prepaid. I never have complaints, and I have never spoken to a representative.

The thing about Tracphone is that it's great for people who don't call a lot, hence why there's 60 minutes for three months. But if someone is planning on using 1000 minutes a month, it's not a sensible option since they'd be using way more minutes per month. At that point, the OP is better off looking at monthly plans rather than just purchasing minutes whenever she needs them.
