We like Sam's for fruit over Aldi because the apples are so much bigger. It is more about quality for us. Having to go through the hassle of paying to get a shopping cart was a deal breaker for me. Anyone that does that, does not care for its customers. It is hard to trust a store like that.

Actually the $.25 for the cart does help the customers. Most people don't want to give up that $.25 so they actually bring the cart back to the store and put it away properly so they get the $.25 back. The carts aren't left all over the parking lot, cars are not getting damaged by them and less employees are needed to round up carts. It's a cost saving measure for the store and since the store has less overhead in doing this. They can charge you less money. All you really need to do is to keep a quarter in your car so you have it to use when you need to shop.

I agree I dont' like alot of their policies like not giving you bags, having 1 person working only no matter how busy, making you deposit a quarter for carts. More hassle than its worth to me plus the place just seems dirty and I dont like alot of their products. That said they are like a spirit airlines, cheap flight but you pay for a coke pay for baggage, etc. Aldi, cheap groceries but no bags, long lines and gotta pay for the cart.

Also, you aren't paying for the cart you put a quarter in and get it back when you return it. Basically instead of paying a bagger $8 an hour to get carts the quarter assures you'll return your own cart or lose a quarter. I normally catch someone walking back to the cart coral and give them a quarter and take their cart, saves them a walk, me a walk and dont gotta mess with the wierd little lock thing on their carts

im sure experiences vary from store to store but i find the aldi i visit to be clean. i don't mind the quarter in the cart thing or not having bags. i see their prices and i see that they are passing along the savings to me. i also have rarely encountered lines long enough to be worthy of complaining about. they also do add cashiers when the line gets long so it isn't always just one.

I usually will try store or unknown brands and then decide. We tried Walmart french fries once and found fries, sliced and chunks of potato all in the same bag so now I pass on them.
I've also worked in food processing plant for potato products. While they did bag several kinds of price points, the higher priced products were sorted more times so had consistently higher quality. Less ends and spoiled bits than the cheaper brands.

Hah, seriously?

You don't pay to get a cart, anyway...it's a quarter that you temporarily deposit and get back when you put the darned thing back where it goes, and it makes a ton of sense to do it that way. You're not out any money.

It's a hassle? Geez, the act of shopping itself must be a REAL chore.

Shop at Aldi weekly and I must say, we like a lot of their products. Aldi does also sell names brands, albeit not as much as regular food chains. We are satisfied with what we purchase from them, there are some differences in some cases between their brands and name brands. Not enough though to make a difference to us. The Aldi where we are is selling more and more certified organic items as well we have noticed including produce.

We were just at Aldi today. The cart deposit, we think, is a good thing. No random carts rolling around denting the cars, yay! We like bringing our own bags, as the canvas bags hold more and are easier to carry than regular grocery plastic bags. A couple of times, we've forgotten our bags, and so we have a couple of Aldi plastic bags and one insulated bag that we bought there. No big deal at $.10 for the regular bag and $.79 for the insulated.

We usually get coffee creamer there - $2.29 for a quart is much better than the $3.29 to $3.99 at the grocery stores here. Cottage cheese is $2.29 for 24 oz. Let's see, what else did we get? Oh, condensed soups at $.59 for tomato and $.69 (I think) for cream of chicken and cream of mushroom. $2.69 each for canned salmon; same stuff is $3.99 at the cheapest grocery. Ground beef ($2.89/lb), mozzarella ($3.29/lb), strawberry jam ($1.99), and Aldi brand equivalent of Honey Bunches of Oat w/almonds ($1.79).

We usually don't get produce there, though we've had good luck with it when we have done. We've liked their dairy products, the cookies (Pecan Sandies!!), herbs & spices, condiments - all good. Chips are edible, but not the greatest. Good for a cheap fix. Soda is nasty.

Today, as we were walking past the cookies, there was a man with a can of the shortbread cookies in his hand. He was shaking his head as he said to himself, "that can't be right". I informed him that those cookies were indeed $2.89 for the can. He told me they were $3.99 the last place he went. Nice savings.

We always get our milk and half & half at Aldi...it's cheaper than even our military commissary where we do a lot of other shopping. Produce is often a better deal, and of generally high quality (avocados tend to be smaller than at the commissary or other supermarkets, often, but also much cheaper, so we just get more). Sometimes shredded cheese, although that's often as cheap at the commissary...meat is always cheaper at the commissary, too. Crackers and chips are a better deal at Aldi, but I try to limit my consumption of those in general. I tend to not do canned soups, overall, but cartons of broth are the best deal at Aldi.

Aldi is a special trip for us, as it's a bit far. We got our milk there today, but it's thirty cents cheaper for a gallon at the farmers market. We also get most of our produce at the fm, the rest at Costco. The shredded mozz was cheaper than the grocery sale price this week, score!

We keep a couple of canned condensed soups on hand for casserole-type things, or just "I don't want to cook" times. Usually, though, I make soup from scratch. Was going to get a rotisserie chicken at Costco for several meals, but they were OUT!

Their crackers are a great price! But I'm trying to cut down on the wheat products, semi-successfully, and so I try to avoid those. They're about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the ones at the grocery store.
