I have an iPhone 4s on Tracfone ... about $40 every three months. My kids have HTC Incredibles (older Android), also on Tracfone. They have to do extra chores when they need more minutes, but they don't need them too often, as they are well-schooled in the ways of Wi-Fi.

I have a tracfone. I was happy with virgin mobile's $35 plan, 300 talk unlimited text and data, but decided to see if I could save a bit more. The android phone I had (kyocera event) was also really bad for talking, sound was garbled, but I couldn't afford another. So I found a $10 tracphone on amazon (phone was $5, shipping was over $5), it's decent for what I paid. Not bare bones, has a camera and mp3 and qwerty keyboard. And a $30 120 minute card that lasts 90 days (the phone automatically comes with 10 minutes and 60 days). The phone has "triple minutes for life" so that 120 instantly becomes 360 minutes. I didn't know how much I would use, but I figured even if I used all the minutes in a month, it would still save a few bucks. Almost 3 months later I still have 85 minutes left. I have people send picture messages to facebook, I can't see them on the tiny screen anyway.

I still use my kyocera android phone as a sort of "mini-tablet", works with wifi.
