I use StraightTalk on ATT towers. The APN is tracfone. It's $45 a month for unlimited talk, text, and 2-5gb bandwidth (I forget how much - used to be 2, but they increased it).
I think if anything goes wrong, you are kind of on your own, but I have been using this for a few years and it's been okay. Tower availability isn't great where I am. You don't get to roam on these plans, so you really have to look at the coverage maps with that in mind. The only other consistent issue has been sending MMS. Sometimes it just doesn't seem to work. You have more flexibility with these plans on Android because you can adjust the APN settings manually.
Wife and I have used Tracfone for several years. We have an old plan that they bill my AMEX card for $17 per month for two phones. One phone gets 100 minutes a month, the other get 80. The plan is different now but they honor my original deal. We had dumb, flip phones and they served our limited use purpose. Under the plan we have, the minutes do accumulate.
I recently upgraded to a Tracfone, LG Optimus, Android smart phone. I bought the phone at Walmart for $29.99. Took a few minutes to add it to Tracfone network, enable it, and disable the old phone.
There is a way to tell what network/format Tracfone is using for a specific phone model. AHA... just found it. Look on the box the phone is on:
CDMA-S is Sprint, CDMA-V is Verizon (what mine is), GSM-A is AT&T, GSM-T is T-Mobile
I have not used the new phone enough to see what Internet connection is costing me (in minutes) but so far it does not seem bad.

Sounds like you have a LG Optimus Fuel (L34C). That is a good little phone. I have one here (got it on sale for $19.99) it's not activated but I use it as a GPS and mini wifi device. I used it as a phone for about a month before switching to it's big brother the LG Ultimate 2 (L41C), a great phone!
You can go on the internet on wifi with the phone and save your mb data for when you really need it.
I had considered getting a tracfone but decided on FreedomPop instead. I get 200 minutes, 500 texts and 500mb of data all for the grand price of $0.00 per month! Yes you read that right, it's a free service, no BS! I have been very happy with them so far.

I was looking into getting an android tracfone but didn't want to spend a lot. Then I found this phone for $29. Then I found another offer for this phone + 200 minute card (600 after triple minutes) for $39.99. That's how much the 200 minute card costs at walmart. So....free phone.
I bought one, works great. I had been using my old virgin mobile kyocera phone as a mini-tablet, but it was a terrible phone and only slightly better as a tablet, so anything is an improvement, really .
A tracfone??? you know what year it is? Plus the police keep have those phones tracked
I had one for several years, but never used it, so I let it lapse. With the purchase of a nearly-free phone, it was possible to have a year of service for $80, by buying four 90-day packages for $19.99. That would provide a few minutes of calling time, too, maybe 120 minutes a year, enough for occasional use when away from home. I think that is still the cheapest rate they have. It was strictly a telephone, capable of voice calls to and from, with no frills like voicemail or caller ID. I never even gave the number to anybody. Once a month or so I'd plug into the charger, and leave it turned off.
I've checked out a couple of the offers now for the free services, it seems that you have to buy a phone that costs at least a hundred bucks. And they are on a coverage map that is dead nearly everywhere except major metros. By contrast, my Tracfone cost, I think, $9.95 and worked everywhere.

I'm curious about some of the free cell services out there but content with Tracfone for now. I keep a three Tracfones going: my own nice smartphone, a feature phone for my bf to use occasionally, and a $5 flip phone for my mom. The non-smartphone ones are on AT&T which has good coverage everywhere. The smartphone is on Verizon and has good coverage too.
The AT&T phones get the $19.99/90 day/60 min cards. So $80/yr each.
My smartphone has service days out to 2020 and ~4200 talk/text/mb data each. I got all this service for about $200 due to some sales and perks I found. I don't use many units so I probably don't have to feed the phone for about 5 years.
I've had a little flip top Tracfone for about 7 years now. It has double minutes and I was thinking of getting one with triple minutes, but the phones are a lot larger. I like mine - it's only 1 1/2" X 3", so I'm keeping it. It's been dropped, left in the fridge, stepped on, and it's still going. Never had a problem with coverage and I've only had to contact the company once, when I had to change my number. I guess I talk a lot, because my minutes always run out before my service time ends. Right now my service time is good through 2019, so I guess I don't have to worry about that for a while.
Tracfone's the best. I like the fact that if I call someone their caller ID can't identify me.
Sounds like a creeper.
