Most electric companies have smart meters. For instance I have sorted through my usage of electricity in kWh per day for the last month (along with temperature). My second highest usage was on the hottest day of the month (not the coldest).

One of the people in the house was gone from 30 Oct - 04 Nov, so you can see those five days have the lowest electricity usage.

Then I compare my heaviest usage day to an average day. I see that they are about the same until
1:00 PM. After that the usage goes way up.

Try downloading some data, and look for peak usage. It helps to have some kind of log as to which days you do laundry or other things in your control.

You need to study your data tables before you spend money on hiring outside people or hooking up equipment.

This is the same house on the worst month in 5.5 years (December 2013). Almost every day is 100 kWh or higher. There are no low days at all. Even one day when it was 51 degrees there was 115 kWh used. I know this was electric space heaters. If I could persuade my parents to wear Snuggies, it would save hundreds of dollars in a single month.

In a 31 day month 6000kwh is an average of 8,065 watts per hour or 67 amps @ 120 volts. I assume you have 200 Amp service, but many older houses only have 100 Amp service.

I would really like to see your daily usage that month. Something sounds terribly wrong. Usually people who have that kind of electricity usage know what the issue is, and they aren't speculating about light bulbs. It almost sounds like you have a thief.

I would think I have a smart meter, but I looked on the electric company website and do not see where I can download the data.

I would feel better about having a bill more than my car payment, if we did not walk around freezing. This house is very cold. You can often walk outside and it it warmer.

I really feel like insulation is the main culprit. I have opened walls that have had none. You can stand against an interior wall and feel coldness.

I had to open an online account first. You need a paper copy of your old bill as they will ask specific questions that can only be answered if you have a bill.

At the highest level you can usually look at your monthly kWh along with information

Bill Date kWh
  1. Tue, Dec 1, 15| 1,738
  2. Mon, Nov 2, 15| 2,107
  3. Thu, Oct 1, 15 | 1,973
  4. Tue, Sep 1, 15| 1,869
  5. Sat, Aug 1, 15 | 2,011
  6. Wed, Jul 1, 15 | 1,679
  7. Mon, Jun 1, 15 | 1,414
  8. Fri, May 1, 15 | 1,509
  9. Wed, Apr 1, 15| 2,097
  10. Sun, Mar 1, 15 | 2,530
  11. Fri, Jan 30, 15 | 1,973
  12. Mon, Jan 5, 15 | 1,855

But it doesn't tell me much. I just see that I pay more for space heaters in the winter, and more for air conditioning, and less on the shoulder seasons. With day to day readouts or hour to hour readouts I get a better feel.

It may not answer all your questions, but I would try very hard to do this first before you start paying people.

Try creating an online account from your electric company.

I just found the data on my online account. It appears as though the hours with the most usage, we are not home.

Before the heat went on, we used 20-30 kWh per day. It goes from 50-130 kHz after the heat is on.

Several hours a day the usage goes to 5.55 kWh. And we have already left for the day. Not sure what this is telling me.

The energy audit I have scheduled is free because of my income. I read that they can make up to $20k in repairs and I am praying they help Fix some things in the house.

I was told by two hvac techs that the heat system set up is not ideal But it would cost $20k to have it changed.. I would think insulation, siding and a roof would be equally good at lowering energy costs.

Plus I have asbestos siding. We shall see what they say and agree to do.

I just know something has to give. I looked into grants for solar panels this week but living in the woods is not beneficial for solar.

Dryer ? Dishwasher? Hot Water Heater Recovery in the morning.

Alot of people pop a load of wash in the Washer overnight then toss it in dryer 1st thing in the morning. Same thing with Dishwasher Start it up as they go to work. Things like sheets / Towels are washed in hot water as you walk out the door (more hot water). Shower in the morning ....

OP,

I will be interested to see what the results of your audit reveals. It sounds like you have heat pumps with electric for backup.

Some possible things to consider:

1. your heat pumps may have issues - I once had a problem with a sudden high energy bill in April and the technician found that the unit was running constantly on pure electric because some switch broke in the open position and did not allow it to switch back to heat pump mode. (Pure electric is nearly 3X's more expensive than in heat pump mode.) The unit was running (always on) but, not producing any heat.

2. I had an electric water heater, located in an unheated basement. I never realized how much it costs to run an electric water heater until I moved to a similar size house with a propane tankless water heater. It cost me (one person household) about $40 per month to heat a 50 gallon electric tank. The cost for a tankless propane water heater, the propane is costing me about $2.50 a month! My electric usage in my former home was about 600 kwh during a month when I did not use heat or air conditioning. In my new place the kwh per month for a similar time frame is less then 200 kwh per month. So, I know that a substantial portion of the difference in electric consumption can be associated with the monthly cost of an electric water heater.

3. Is it possible that the former owners tried to mess with the electric meter in an attempt to steal electricity and the meter itself may have issues?

I hope you report back when you get the results of your energy audit and tell us what they find. I do hope it is an independent company doing the audit and not someone who is just trying to sell you something.

I thought you went to 6000 kWh in one month? That should be an average of 200 kWh per day. I don't see how your peak could be 130 kWh

I actually had one day with 140 kWh in a 52 week period. A total of 9 days where usage was 100 kWh or more. Mostly it is space heaters or air conditioners.

We have oil heat, but when it peaked at $3.799 per gallon, you end up using space heaters to warm up rooms.

Nope. I typically run the dishwasher about 9 pm every night. Some of the 6 kWh hours are happening at 1,2 or 3 am. Others are middle of the day when no one is home. I am fast asleep and laundry is not even on my radar at 1 am. Actually I never even do laundry in the morning, as Indo not have time. 2 kids and 5 pets that need fed trump laundry. I shower in the morning but I am in and out in less than 5 minutes.
